Ireland OBITUARY: Pocahontas Democrat, Pocahontas, Iowa, Thursday, 2 Jun 1921, pg. 1 Funeral of Mrs. John Meehan Held Saturday Mrs. John Meehan Passed Away at Her Home in this City Last Thursday Morning. On last Thursday morning at 7:30 o'clock Mrs. John Meehan passed away at her home in this city after a protracted illness of many months. Although her sickness had been for some length of time it was not until a couple of days before her death that she fell into a semi-unconscious state and at no time from then until the end did she fully regain consciousness. The deceased's maiden name was Nora Ford. She was a native of Ireland and came to this country with friends at about the age of twelve years and made her home in Bloomington, Maryland. On Nov. 1st, 1971 she was united in marriage to John Meehan at Westernport, Maryland and in the year 1877 came west with her husband and family and took up their abode in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. In the year 1892 the family came to Pocahontas county and settled on a farm one mile south and three and one half mile east of the town of Pocahontas where they lived until March 1st, 1913 when they moved into Pocahontas into their present home in Fairview addition. She was seventy-three years old. Had she lived five months longer she would have celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of her wedding. For nearly one half a century she was the constant, amiable and loving companion and helpmate of her doting husband sharing with him his trials and sorrows and rejoicing with him in his joys and successes, seeing only the bright side of life and always ready and eager to lift the shadows that might darken or bring sorrow into others lives. She was a truly devout, noble and God-fearing woman, possessed of those qualities of motherhood that would be willing to sacrifice all that her children might reared as intelligent, christian men and women and her fine family of sons and daughters bears evidence of [living well who have] succeeded. During her long and trying sickness she bore her sufferings in patience and resignation and was never heard to murmur or complain but accepted her crosses as blessings in disguise. She was a truly devoted wife and mother whose many self sacrificing deeds and tender devotion to her family will forever remain sacred in the memory of her loved ones. During her long and trying illness she received every care and comfort that it was possible to give her and the devoted members of her family whom so many times, in by gone years, had received her motherly care, gave her every attention, that her last days might be as free from pain as human hands could make it. She leaves with her loved ones the memory of a mother whose unselfish devotion and undying love, will grow more fervid with them in the years that are to come. Nine children blessed her happy home, of which four, one boy and three girls preceded their mother to their eternal home. Besides her husband she leaves to grieve her absence, two sons and three daughters: James P. and Rose of Pocahontas, Thomas of Minnesota, Mrs. Francis Stegge of Randolph, Nebraska and Mrs. Wm. Pattee of Rolfe. Also one sister, Mrs. B. Dolan of Philadelphia. Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were Mrs. Nora Henzie and daughter, Mrs. Julia Olson, of Ft. Dodge. The funeral was held from the home to Sacred Heart church Saturday at 9:00 o'clock A. M. where services were held, Rev. Father Wagener officiating. The funeral procession then continued on to Calvary cemetery where all that remained of this faithful loving wife and mother was tenderly laid to rest. The Democrat joins with the many friends of this estimable family in offering condolence and sympathy to the bereaved ones.
