Eleanor (Marxen) Abernathy was the eldest daughter of Albert and Viola (Meier) Marten born Feb. 23, 1924. She had five brothers John, Delmar, Elm, Lou and Jim. She married Bernard Marxen on June 6, 1942, and they had seven children Wayne, Dennis (Eileen), Judith Sloane, Gary, Jeanette (Eugene) Furness, Jeraldine (Steve) Smith and Joyce (Randy) Yaddof. Bernard Marxen died on May 19, 2000. Eleanor retired from Davenshires after approximately 20 years where she worked as a “presser." Eleanor then married Richard Abernathy in 1980 where together they owned and operated Rick’s Country Cafe. They served the “Best Ribs” in town. Everyone knew about Rick’s ribs and the family enjoyed them at many family gatherings. After Rick’s passing in 1993, Eleanor spent her time sewing quilts and making baby blankets for each child, grandchild and great-grandchild. One year for Christmas, each child and grandchild received a quilt she had made. During the summer months, you would find her busy canning tomatoes and pears or making her homemade relish, jelly and applesauce. In the fall, she would be freezing homemade pumpkin pies, which she made from fresh pumpkins. She also loved to bake. You never went to Grandma’s house where you didn’t take home a loaf of homemade bread, a jar of jelly, a pie or a special item which she had just finished sewing. You would often find her in her sewing room working on a special project for one of the kids. She loved spending time with her family and seeing those that she loved. She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Viola Marten, husbands Bernard Marxen and Richard Abernathy, two sons Wayne and Gary Marxen, three brothers Elm, Lou and Delmar Marten and a daughter-in-law, Virginia Marxen. We would like to thank her family and friends that faithfully called her and kept her smiling. We would also like to express our deepest appreciation to the staff at Petersen Commons Assisted Living, Manor Care Nursing Home and Heartland Hospice for taking such good care of her.
