Electa had broken her hip and refused to have it set so by the time I knew her she was bedridden in an old-fashioned nursing home. Electa had broken her hip and refused to have it set so by the time I knew her she was bedridden in an old-fashioned nursing home. Prior to the 1970s, nursing homes were usually run by a couple of little old ladies in one of those big old-fashioned houses from the 1800's. They would sponge bath the inhabitants, do some laundry, and prepare the meals. They had no nursing skills or training to speak of. Electa lived in one that was a few miles west of Corydon on Highway 2. By the time that we were old enough to remember our visits with her, she had traveled to the best room in the house (occupancy of this room was by seniority in the house -- you worked your way up to it based on how long you had been a resident of the household). It was a large room with lots of windows that was probably the living room of the house when it was built. We had our Grandma Brown and Grandma Faris and then we had "Grandma in the bed" which was our name for Electa as we had never seen her anywhere but in a bed. Electa liked to crochet so sometimes she'd ask my mother to go into Corydon and get her some supplies. Sometimes the little great grandkids would come and their parents would sit them on the side of the bed so that they could have their picture taken with Electa. Electa was very religious and listened to the religious programs on the radio. She must have been very concerned about our religious training as she ordered a comic book type magazine for my sister and myself concerning Jesus and religion. I was quite touched that she thought enough to send this to me. NOTE ON FAMILY NAMES: Note that some of the people in this cemetery are named Grisamore while others are named Grismore. According to Esther Caroline Grismore Brown, the Grisamore family in Wayne County changed the spelling of their name to Grismore during World War I as they felt that the merchants in the area were charging them higher prices due to their German name. They voted to delete the "a" in order to make their name less German. This accounts for the fact that some have one name and some have the other. Those buried before the name change have the old name on the tombstone while those buried after the name change show the new name. The original family name when they emigrated from Alsace/Lorraine (German/French border) was Griesemer. When the family moved from Pennsylvania to southern Indiana in the early 1800s, their new neighbors of English background renamed them Grisamore.
