According to Esther Caroline Grismore Brown, the Grisamore family in Wayne County changed the spelling of their name to Grismore during World War I as they felt that the merchants in the area were charging them higher prices due to their German name. The original family name when they emigrated from Alsace/Lorraine (German/French border) was Griesemer. When the family moved from Pennsylvania to southern Indiana in the early 1800s, their new neighbors of English background renamed them Grisamore. MORE ON ELTON: In family photographs of Elton with his brothers and sisters and parents, his elderly parents sit in the center with their grown children behind (ages in 20s and 30s). Then there are two children under 5 next to the elderly couple. These are Elton and his sister Esther. It seems that Elton was an accident; however, once he arrived his parents felt that he should have a sibling his own age to go through life with so they planned Esther. Elton married Helen Backsen on 11/1/1927. The couple had 2 children including Bernice Esther Grismore and Bobby Dean Grismore.
