Elias Barger (48356453) Suggested edit: Obituary published in Manchester Press on Thursday, January 23rd, 1947 Title: Oldest Man in County Dies Elias Barger, pioneer of this county and without doubt the oldest man within its borders, died at the Bolin hospital in this city yesterday morning, Jan. 22, 1947, at the great age of 98 years. Mr. Barger, despite his burden of years, remained active until a week ago, when he fell at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ralph Sherman, in Greeley, and fractured a hip, after which he was taken to the local hospital. Funeral services will be held at the Greeley Methodist church tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, the Rev. Frank Schepple officiating, and burial will be made in Grant View cemetery there. The pioneer was born at West Chester, N. Y., March 3, 1849, a son of Elias and Catherine Silick Barger, and came to Colesburg, this county, in early childhood. On Sept. 22, 1876, he was married Elizabeth Von Talge of Colesburg by the Rev. Henry Klaus, and they were long engaged in farming near that village. Twenty-nine years ago the family moved to Greeley, where Mrs. Barger died in October of 1935. Since that event Mr. Barger has resided in the homes of his daughters in Greeley. Surviving are the following children, John of Montana; Samuel of Oregon; Joe of Edgewood; and Howard, Mrs. Ralph Sherman and Mrs. Al Burbridge, all of Greeley, together with 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife Mr. Barger was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Henry Holthaus, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Blanche Eden of Calamus. For many years he had been a member of the Methodist church. This is a brief record of a nonagenarian whose life, remarkable for longevity, was marked by steady industry, devotion to his family and good citizenship. He came to this part of Iowa when it was still an unbroken wilderness, and he manfully played his part in the transformation that has since taken place. Although totally blind during the latter years of his life, he maintained the courage characteristic of the first settlers of the middle west and accepted his affliction with resignation.
