He was the 4th generation descendant of George Bernhardt Mann who was born in Huffenhardt, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany in about 1701 and immigrated to the colonies in 1732. Elias married Harriet E. It is believed he was born in Monroe County, Virginia which is now West Virginia as was his father, Moses Mann. He was the 4th generation descendant of George Bernhardt Mann who was born in Huffenhardt, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany in about 1701 and immigrated to the colonies in 1732. Elias married Harriet E. Ballard who was born in about 1838. It is believed that she was also born in Monroe County, Virginia as was her father, Rudolph Ballard. She was the 7th generation descendant of Thomas Ballard who was born in 1630 in Inkberrow, Worcestershire, England and immigrated to the colonies. It is estimated that Elias and Harriet were married in 1856 since their first child, Mary Elizabeth Mann, was born on March 8, 1857 in what was then Virginia. In the 1860 Census Elias and Harriet were in Milledgeville, Lincoln County, Kentucky. He was a dentist and they had two children, Mary Elizabeth Mann (age 3) and Paulina Jennie Mann (age 1). Later in the 1860s they had 3 more children in Kentucky. They were Sarah L. Mann (b. July 1, 1862), Martha Josephine Mann (b. Oct 4, 1865), and Walter Preston Mann (b. Aug 25, 1868). It is not known where the family was in the 1870 census. However, in the 1880 census they were in Nodaway County, White Cloud township in northwest Missouri. Elias was then listed as a farmer and they had only 11 year old Walter living with them. In the 1900 census, Elias was still in Nodaway County but he was alone and 73 years old. Harriet Mann had died in April of 1896 near the community of Arkoe in Nodaway County. She is buried in the Salem Cemetery near Pumpkin Center in Nodaway County. Their only son, Walter P. Mann, had run away in about 1884 at the age of 15. The 1910 census showed that Elias had moved in with his daughter, Josie (Martha Josephine), and his son-in-law, David Owen, in Dawes County, Whitney precinct, Nebraska. He was 83 years old and died the following year on January 15, 1911. ________________________________ Elias Mann At four o'clock last Sunday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dave Owens, death came to Elias Mann. The funeral services were held from the Christian church Wednesday, Rev. Herbert Bryce being in charge. Elias Mann was born in Knox County, Vir., on May 12, 1827 making him 83 years, 5* months, and 3 days old. Mr. Mann moved to Kentucky in an early day and from there to Otowa county*, Mo., where his wife died some sixteen years ago. He practiced dentistry in Otowa county* until he came to Dawes county two years ago. Mr. Mann made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Dave Owens of Wayside.He leaves five children. Mrs. Mary Johnson, Marysville, Mo., Mrs. Jennie Ross, Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. Sally Hogan, Kentucky, Mrs. Dave Owens, Wayside, and Walter P. Mann of this city.
