Description	:	Walter Preston Mann Aug 25,1868-July 15,1955 Funeral services for Walter P Mann, 86-year-old Dawes County pioneer who died here Saturday, were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Erlwine Funeral Home. Rev Eddy C Newland officiated and interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr Mann was born in Lexington, Ky, on August 25, 1868, the son of Elias and Harriet E Mann. Rev Eddy C Newland officiated and interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr Mann was born in Lexington, Ky, on August 25, 1868, the son of Elias and Harriet E Mann. He married Tounette Nysted in Chadron on March 9, 1912. Two children were born: Harriet C Hill, now of Sussex, N J, and Walter P Mann, Jr, of San Diego, CA. Six grandchildren also survive him. Mr Mann was one of the earliest settlers of Dawes County. He arrived here from Valentine by covered wagon in August of 1884. The next 15 years he spent as a cowboy in Wyoming then returned to Dawes County and at one time owned a five-section ranch, now known as the Egan Ranch. He was in business in Chadron from 1905 until his retirement in 1946. He and Mrs Mann traveled extensively. They spent three years in Denver, made their home in Florida for some time and also spent seven years at Keystone, S D. Mr Mann was a member of the original committee which secured the location of Chadron State Teachers College. He built one of the first garages in the city. It was located just south of the Niles Cafe. He was also credited with generously supporting many community projects and contributing to the city's development.
