Montgomery Baptist Church Was Filled With Friends and Neighbors After a long and useful life Mr. E.C. Montgomery, long a resident and well known in these parts, passed away at his home 108 N. White street, on Saturday, September 23, 1922, at 8:30 in the evening. He was born in Mercer county, Pa., July 11, 1844. He was seventy eight years two months and twelve days of age. His illness, which he bore with patience, extended over a period of two years. He was united in marriage on Nov. 15, 1870 to Martha Carter. To their union eight children were born. Two boys died in infancy. A daughter, Mrs. Lulu Bonnifield, passed away Jan. 21, 1906. Those remaining with their mother to mourn their loss are Arch E. Montgomery, McMinville, Oregon; Ralph Montgomery, Mrs. Mima Housel and Mrs. Mildred Lawrence all of whom reside near Mt. Pleasant. Two brothers, Henry Montgomery of California, and Irvin Montogomery of Topeka, Kan., also remain. There are nine grandchildren also. Deceased was brought up in the discipline of the Presbyterian church. Later in 1869 he united with the Methodist church at Prairie Gem. He spent most of his life on a farm. Ten years ago he removed to Mt. Pleasant. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father, a patient sufferer during his long illness and will be greatly missed by a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services, conducted by pastor Frank E. Weston, were held in the First Baptist church, where he attended after coming to town, Monday afternoon at three o'clock. The house was crowded by sympathizing neighbors and acquaintances. The flowers were many and beautiful, Mrs. Martin Harshbarger, Mrs. Bert Jay, Mr. C.H. Cyall, and Mr. Weston, with Miss Mary Shipp as accompanist, sang favorite hymns of Mr. Montogomery. They were "Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus," "When the Roll is Called up Yonder," and "Shall We Meet Beyond the River." The pallbearers were Cash Carnahan, Warren Freeman, Lafe Housel, E.E. Glover, Max Smith and Robert Lawrence. Interment was in Forest Home. Mount Pleasant News, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, September 27, 1922, pg. 22.
