(Cozad) Montgomery, was born July 11, 1844, Mercer Co., Pa.; died 19 His parents were natives of the United States. He grew up on a farm and farming was his occupation. .When about eighteen years old, he came with his parents to Illinois and engaged in raising hedge plants. The spring of 1866 they moved to Henry county, Iowa, and engaged extensively in raising hedge plants for four years. Martha Ann Carter and Eliphalet Cozad Montgomery were married Nov, 15, 1870, Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa. To them eight children were born: Willie, Oct. 29, 1871, Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa; died Nov. 3, 1871, Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa. After their marriage, they went to the west part of the state where he worked that fall and winter, coming back in the spring. Her father helped them to get a home where they were soon pleasantly located with good neighbors, good school and church privileges and where their children were born. About 1895 they sold their nice prairie farm and bought a place four miles west of Mt. Pleasant, where they are near a church and school house and have a well fixed, comfortable home. Lulu Bell taught in the common schools of the county most of the time for nine years, failing health causing her to quit teaching. She is now married and has a comfortable home. Archer E. and Ralph E. are both married. The former has had a good position at the County Infirmary the past three years. Ralph has a nice position with the Western Wheel Scraper Company at Aurora, Illinois. Mima L. graduated in the country school when fifteen years of age, when on account of her mother's failing health she had to quit her studies and take charge of the work at home, which she cheerfully and faithfully did for two years, when her mother's health permitted her to return to her studies and she is now in the Academy at Mt. Pleasant, preparing herself for teaching. The two youngest are at home with the old folks. He was raised by United Presbyterian parents and instructed in the rules of that church and before their marriage he united with the Methodist church, but did not instruct his children as faithfully in the way of life as he had been. She was brought up by Methodist parents and afterwards embraced the faith of the First Day Adventists to which she strongly holds. All honor to a noble Christian mother who has raised a large family and taught them their duty to their Savior and as far as any of them have failed to honor their parents and serve the God their mother served, so far have they failed of making the best of their lives for which they will have to give an account to God. Carter Family and Their Descendants compiled by his grandson Howard Carter. 1905, P. 100-101. _____ Funeral Rites For Mrs. Montgomery Hold Services At First Baptist church On Friday Afternoon The First Baptist church was filled with many friends and neighbors at two o'clock Friday afternoon for the funeral of Mrs. Martha Montgomery, who passed away so unexpectedly at the home of her daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Lawrence, on the evening of November 13, 1929. Hundreds of beautiful flowers covered the casket. A male quartet, M.S. Cremer, Will Evans, E.F. Phelps and Prof. Dennis, with Mrs. Dan Winter an accompanist, sang, "Some Sweet Day," "When My Soul Reaches Home," and "The Beautiful Land." Those who bore the remains to their last resting place in Forest Home were H.E. Rukgaber, Will Young, Al Walker, S. Skinton, Sanford Boyd and Max Smith. Pastor Frank Weston conducted the services and spoke from 2 Cr. 5-8, "At home with the Lord." The good woman became a member of the First Baptist church on November first, 1921. Before her removal to this city she was active as a member of the West Highland Methodist Episcopal church. She was a faithful, earnest, Christian woman beloved by her brothers and sisters in the Lord. She will be much missed in her church circles. Martha Ann (Carter) Montgomery, eldest daughter of William and Jemima (Hillyard) Carter, was born at Mathews, Grant county, Ind. Oct. 26, 1852. At the time of her death she was seventy-seven years, and seventeen days of age. November 15, 1870, just fifty-nine years from the day of her funeral, she was married to E.C. Montgomery, who preceded her in death Sept. 23, 1922. Eight children were born to them: Nellie and Irvine, both of whom died in infancy, Mrs. Lulu Belle Bennifield, who died Jan. 21, 1906, Arch Montgomery, who resides at McMinville, Oregon; Ralph Montgomery of this city; Walker Montgomery, Salem, Iowa; and Mrs. Ed Heusel and Mrs. Mark Lawrence, both of Mt. Pleasant. Ten grandchildren and one great grandchild also remain.Two sisters, Mrs. R.D. McConnell and Mrs. J.L. Anderson, also are left. After the death of their husbands she and Mrs. McConnell made their homes together, being very devoted to each other and having been "Aunt" Matt and "Aunt" Em to their many friends. These three sisters have been permitted to enjoy each others companionship all these years, but now the circle if broken. She has many nieces and nephews devoted to her among them Mr. and Mrs. Jesse W. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Clay L. Anderson and Mrs. Myrtle Mallams of this city, and Mr. and Mrs. John Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Max Montgomery of Monmouth, Ill. Her unexpected death was a great shock to those who loved her, and yet they have the comfort that her passing was without pain. Long and lovingly will she be remembered. Mt. Pleasant Free Press, Mt.
