Martin was born in Alleghany county, New York, August 22, 1827. He lived there until he was sixteen years of age, when with his parents he went to Dodge county, Wisconsin, where he made his home for twenty-five years. He came to Fillmore county, Nebraska in 1868. On coming to this state, he at once became interested in making a home for himself and homesteaded a tract of land near Fillmore Mills and laid out and platted the village of Fillmore. Mr. Martin was interested largely in the building of this part of the state. The first post office established in Fillmore county was at Fillmore City in 1871, and Mr. Martin enjoyed the distinction of being the first post master of this county, being appointed by President Grant. The office was kept in J.E. Porter's store, the salary for the first year being only $12. He took a prominent part in organizing the county and townships and became a member of the first board of county commissioners. He was defeated as the Republican nominee for Representative, but reduced the opposition from 1, 000 to twenty-two. he fought hard for Fairmont as the location for the county seat and was a member of the board of supervisors when the first courthouse was built and when the poor farm was bought. He served as mayor of Fairmont for a number of terms and for years was an Odd Fellow and A.O.U.W. In 1877 Mr. Martin came to Fairmont where he resided at the time of his death. Here he began business as a dealer in coal, grain,, livestock and farm machinery and continued the same till the infirmities of old age made it necessary for him to live a less strenuous life. On August 8, 1949, Mr. Martin was married to Miss Delight Nichols who died April 11, 1909, and was buried in the Fairmont cemetery. To this union were born six children. The surviving are M.E. and Mrs. E. Dean of Fairmont, and E.C. of Hill City, S.D. The deceased are Horace L., Mary and Lucretia Kramer. Mr. Martin lived to a ripe old age, being at the time of his death 88 years, 3 months and 24 days old. He had been a conspicuous figure on the streets of Farimont for many years. His was a genial, optimistic nature. He will be missed, but the good he has done will continue to bless mankind. The funeral services were held from the Congregational Church of Fairmont, December 18, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. A.T. Evans officiated. Interment was in the Fairmont cemetery.
