Read More	Adams County Free Press (Corning, Iowa), Saturday, March 13, 1915, p. 4 Killed At Nodaway Mrs. Samuel McKown Meets Death By Train No. 4 Yesterday (Friday) after we had gone to press and had about 400 of our edition printed we learn that Mrs. Samuel McKown of Nodaway was killed in that city by stepping in front of No. 4. Many passengers standing nearby saw the lady coming from the hotel which she and her husband had recently purchased, and thought she intended boarding the train. Instead she seemed to watch the train until quite near when it appeared to those who witnessed the act that she stepped deliberately into the center of the track. The engine struck her fairly in the face and she received injuries from which she immediately expired. The lady was about 70 years of age and had lived in Nodaway many years. It will be remembered that her son, William, committed suicide about four years ago by drinking wood alcohol and since that time it is reported that Mrs. McKown has acted queerly at intervals. The coroner and other officers went to Nodaway immediately following the accident to hold an inquest. Adams County Free Press (Corning, Iowa), Saturday, March 20, 1915, p. 4 Mrs. Samuel McKown Last week we gave a short account of the accident at Nodaway last Friday, in which Mrs. Samuel McKown lost her life by being hit by train No. 4. The accident happened just as this paper was going to press and we could give only a short account. The accident happened a short distance west of the Nodaway depot. Coroner Roland was called immediately after the accident and an inquest was held. Several who witnessed the accident testified before the coroner’s jury and all seemed to agree that the lady saw the train coming but was unable to escape. The jury composed of F. M. Eastlack, Tom Conway and Geo. Ross, after hearing the evidence returned the following verdict: “We do find that the deceased came to her death by accidentally being struck by the engine on train No. 4 of the C. B. & Q. railroad at the second crossing west of the Nodaway depot about 1:23 p. m. on the 12th day of March, 1915.” The following from the Nodaway News gives an account of the life of the lady: It seems from the evidence brought out at the coroner’s inquest that Mrs. McKown became confused and hesitated while on the track so that there was no time to check the headway of the train after the danger was seen by the engineer. The train stopped, it is said, in one train length after the accident. Eliza Cantberry [Canterbury] was born in Ireland, March 28, 1842 and died March 12, 1915, being aged 72 years, 11 months and 14 days. During her girlhood she moved with her parents to Illinois where she was united in marriage to Samuel McKown, Sept. 25th, 1866; later they removed to Iowa and in our community, and with the exception of a short residence in Villisca, had lived here all the time since. Mr. and Mrs. McKown were parents of eight children, four of whom died in infancy; one son, William, dying four years ago. The surviving children are Americus and Mrs. Lillie Patton of Nodaway and Mrs. Maggie Sutherland of Villisca who are left with the aged father to mourn the loss of the dear wife and mother. Mrs. McKown was a member of the Christian church, having joined many years ago when the church was organized at the McMillen schoolhouse. The funeral was held at the M. E. church Sunday at 10 a. m., conducted by Rev. McCartney. Interment at Guss cemetery.
