Read More	Adams County Free Press (Corning, Iowa), Saturday, February 24, 1923, p. 5 Samuel McKown was born in Ireland December 14th, 1843, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wallace Patton February 13th, 1923, aged 79 years, 1 month and 29 days. He came to America when a boy 14 years of age, and settled in the state of New York. He moved to the state of Illinois and from there went into the service of his country, joining Company H, 11 regiment, Illinois Cavalry, March 6, 1865, and served until the close of the war. He was united in marriage to Eliza Ann Canterbury September 25, 1867. To this union were born eight children, five preceding the father in death. The mother and wife died March 12th, 1915. The children who are left to mourn his demise are Marcus McKown of Clarinda, Iowa, Mrs. Wallace Patton of Nodaway, Iowa, and Mrs. Ira Sutherland of Atlantic, Iowa. Also a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a large host of friends. He was one of the early pioneers of the country, coming to Taylor County in 1881, and settling on a farm southeast of Nodaway where he resided until he moved to town a few years ago. He was a kind and loving father, a devoted husband and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He will ever be remembered as a man with a big heart. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of this place for a number of years, which he served with faithfulness as long as it was possible and he was able. He will be missed, but not forgotten as his kind of [words unreadable] will go on and on, as the years go by. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15. Interment was made in the Guss cemetery. The friends of this vicinity extend their sympathy to these bereaved ones.
