Eliza was a fierce defender of her family and made the local news in 1887 when she was charged with assault on a male neighbour who allegedly called her husband a liar. She reportedly punched him 3 times in the face. Eliza faced a $2 fine or 10 days in jail. She made it known she wouldn't pay the fine.
