Description	:	The fourth child of Thomas and Bessie Johnson was another daughter, Eliza Ann. Eliza was born about 1858.She was the first of Thomas and Bessie's children to be born in Ontario. She married Martin McLaughlin on February 1879, the witnesses at the ceremony were Eliza's sister Lizzie and brother William. At the time of the 1881 census they were living in Plympton Township, not far from her parents, with their one year old daughter, Ida. That census shows Eliza as being 23 and Martin 24. At the time of the 1881 census they were living in Plympton Township, not far from her parents, with their one year old daughter, Ida. That census shows Eliza as being 23 and Martin 24. They had a son Gilbert, later in 1881 and in late 1885 or 1886 another son, Austin Clyde. The CBD lists two other children, Frank and Harvey, but I have found no other record of them. (But it doesn't mention Austin!) Unfortunately, this young family was destined to be broken apart by death. Martin died at about the age of thirty in June 1888, his obituary reporting that he was stricken with "paralysis" and died about two weeks later. We do not know if Eliza was still living at the time of Martin's death; she died sometime between Austin's birth and 1891. There is a death record for a Betsey McLaughlin who died October 3, 1885 in Lambton County. No age is given, and there is nothing else to indicate that this could be Eliza apart from a complete dearth of any other possibilities in the index of Ontario deaths. This woman died of metritis, which is an inflammation of the womb. This could conceivably be Eliza, if it is her, then she died after giving birth to Austin, and this would make Austin about a year older than he appears to be in the census reports. This is possible but by no means certain. The census that year showed Austin and Ida living on the farm with their Johnson grandparents; Gilbert was on the next farm with an elderly couple named John and Margaret Burnette. In 1901 Austin was living with his uncle Robert Johnson and his family, the census listed him as an "adopted son". That same year his brother Gilbert was living with aunt Lizzie Johnson Pulse, and his sister Ida married Frederick Syer in Lambton County, although the marriage record states that Ida was resident in Detroit at the time of the wedding. The 1911 census found Ida and Frederick living at West Mill, in Brantford County, Ontario. They had no children, and Frederick died in 1925. Ida died in 1958, and is buried with Frederick in Wyoming Cemetery. Austin married Elizabeth Harkness in 1914, at that time he was resident in Sarnia and working as a butcher. (He was about 28 at the time, but reported his age as 22 on the marriage license, maybe because his bride was only 17?). Austin died of pneumonia after an 8 day illness on January 7, 1919 at the age of 32. The Sarnia News Observer reported that Austin was survived by a sister (Ida) and two brothers. Now, one was Gilbert, but who was the other one? This lends credence to the CBD's assertion that there were brothers named Frank and Harvey. He was buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia. Austin left two children; his wife Elizabeth remarried in 1921. Gilbert McLaughlin died in 1968 at the age of 86 and is buried in the same plot with Austin at Lakeview. Mrs. Douglas McLaughlin of Sarnia is Gilbert's daughter-in-law and she was interested in receiving information on the Johnson family when I corresponded with her in 2003. She told me that her husband had known nothing about his Johnson family background.
