Description	:	Thomas and Bessie Johnson's second child was another daughter, Sarah. She was born around 1854 while the family was still living in Quebec. She is listed as a 7 year old in the 1861 census. The CBD lists Sarah as one of two children who died "young", and since she doesn't appear in any subsequent census listings with the family, or any at all as far as I have been able to determine, I had assumed that Sarah died sometime between 1861 and the next census in 1871. Thomas Johnson listed Sarah as one of his children in his will, which was drafted in April 1897. I had thought that perhaps this was a daughter-in-law, but receiving family history material from the family of Sarah's youngest brother George clarified the situation, at least in part. This list of the Johnson siblings included Sarah, and recorded that she died June 16, 1897 and was buried in Oban Cemetery. This explains why Sarah was included in Thomas' will, but still a mystery to me is where Sarah was if she wasn't living with her family in the 1871, 1881 or 1891 censuses. One possibility is that she was living elsewhere as a servant. There was a Sarah Johnson living with a family in Toledo, Ohio in 1880 who may have been her…the census listed her as 22, a couple of years younger than Sarah would have been, but she was born in Canada of English-born parents. Sarah's death certificate adds to the evidence that she worked outside the home, her occupation on that document is noted as "cook." Since the first draft of this document was written, the 1891 census for Canada has been indexed and put online. I have tried various searches for Sarah in that database and have found no one that could possibly be her, which adds to my suspicion that she may have been working in the US. (The 1890 US census was destroyed by fire). Sarah was 43 years old when she died on June 16, 1897 and her death was caused by cancer of the womb. She is buried in Oban Cemetery, which is just down London Road from the Johnson farm.
