Description	:	Mary Ann, the eldest child of Thomas and Bessie Johnson, was born in Quebec in late 1851 or early 1852, soon after her parents' arrival from England. She was given the names of both of her grandmothers, Mary Groves Nelson and Ann Mortimer Johnson. In the 1851 census, she is listed as Anna, age 1 year. (the census was actually taken in 1852). By 1861, the family had moved to Lambton County, Ontario, and Mary Ann is listed in that year's census as Ann Johnson, age 10. By 1861, the family had moved to Lambton County, Ontario, and Mary Ann is listed in that year's census as Ann Johnson, age 10. Mary Ann married Apollis Napoleon Hitchcock sometime around the early 1870's….records of Ontario marriages are available online, but I have not been able to locate theirs. I have also checked Michigan weddings for the same period with no luck. Mary Ann was not listed with her parents in the 1871 census. Apollis was only 18 in 1871, but is listed as head of his own household in that census, though I have not been able as yet to view the listing to see if Mary Ann is there. Their first child, Thomas Edward Hitchcock was born January 12, 1874. The family lived in Sarnia at this time and Apollis was employed as a painter and decorator. Little Thomas Edward died of scarlet fever when he was three. Other children were born who did survive, however, and 1880 found the family residing in Huron County, Michigan. They later relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. Unfortunately, Mary Ann developed tuberculosis and in October 1886 the Sarnia Observer reported: " On 14th October, in the township of Plympton, at the residence of her father, Thomas Johnson, Esq., Annie, beloved wife of Apollos N. Hitchcock. (Died) in the 35th year of her age. Late residence, Cleveland". Did Annie fall ill while on a visit home to her parents, or had she come home to be nursed by her mother during her final illness? She is buried in an unmarked grave in Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia. Apollos raised his and Mary Ann's family in Cleveland and he later remarried. He died August 10, 1926. Their family : 1. Julius Hitchcock, born in the early 1870s, I believe this is the child referred to as Joel in the CBD. Julius was married to a woman named Bella, and they are enumerated in the 1920 census in Cleveland. He worked as a boilermaker. 2. Thomas Edward Hitchcock (1874-1877) 3. Eunice Hitchcock born January 11, 1876, married Thomas Mills. They lived in Ontario, Nebraska and Oklahoma before eventually settling in Fresno, California. Eunice died sometime in the 1920s. Her children: a)Thelma Mills born about 1893. b) Clara Mills born 1896. Married Mr Swanson, raised prune plums near Kingsville, CA. She died June 11, 1994, aged 98. c) Robert Mills born about 1898. d Thomas Mills born about 1900. e) Alex Mills born about 1905. f) Olita Mills born about 1909. g) Delores Mills born about 1912. h) Pearl Mills born about 1915. 4. Norman Caesar Hitchcock was born in the late 1870s. He was living with his aunt Lizzie Pulse (see below, child no.4) at the tine of 1891 census, but left for the US in 1899. In the 1900 US census Norman was living with his father Apollos in Cleveland. He later lost a leg, went into the shoe business, and eventually into the artificial limb business. He died August 10, 1954. His wife, Maude Hitchcock, lived to the greatest age of anyone in this family history; she died at the age of 104 in 1995. Norman's children were: A) Bertha May Hitchcock born 1916, married Earl Holdstock. B) Robert Norman Hitchcock, born 1927, married Nancy Lee Gower. C) William Edward Hitchcock, born 1928, married June Pauline Clark. 5. Bertha May Hitchcock born November 11, 1882. She was raised by her mother‘s sister, Lizzie Johnson Pulse, and is listed in the Pulse household for both the 1891 and 1901 censuses. She married John Rice in 1902. They had one son, Thomas Gordon Rice. Bertha and John Rice divorced, and she married William Ferguson. According to Hitchcock descendent Karen Hitchcock, the Fergusons ran a hotel in Florida. I found a death record for Bertha in Pinellas County, FL in May 1970. My grandmother lived there at that time, and I bet she had no idea her first cousin had been living in the same county. 5. George Denmark Hitchcock born December 1884 and died in 1966. He married Ada, and their children were. George's granddaughter Karen Hitchcock supplied me with the information on this family, unless otherwise noted. A) Norman Denmark , born about 1918. B) Keith, born about 1921. C) Gordon, born about 1922.
