Mrs. Lida Ashton died Saturday evening, at Homestake hospital at 7:50 o’clock. The venerable old lady passed her seventy-eighth birthday on the fourteenth of the present month, and her death was hastened by a recent fall some two weeks ago, when she suffered a broken hip. Since that time she has suffered untold agony, though her last moments were very peaceful. At her bedside when she passed away, Mrs. Ashton had the consultation of her only daughter, Mrs. G.W. Curtis and her family and the encouraging presence of her grandsons, Charles Tortette (sic), and Paul Nelson and family, and she breathed her last quietly. The funeral took place this afternoon at 2:30 from the Episcopal church, Rev. Mackintosh officiating and the absence of flowers, a request by Mrs. Ashton, suggested the simplicity of this kindly woman, to whom every form of ostentation was always offensive. Interment was made in West Lead in the Odd Fellows cemetery. Mrs. Lida Ashton came to the Hills in 1879, settling in Galena, and in 1885, moved to Lead, having resided here ever since. The early days and their untiring tales of adventure and chance were ever a source of interest and pleasure to her family, to whom she recounted a wealth of stories about the hunt for gold when the Hills and their possibilities were in their infancy. Mrs. Ashton saw the country grow up, and has ever been proud of the march of progress as she viewed it in Lead, and has ever been content to remain here, as she expressed, for the rest of her days. That she will be missed is superfluous to mention, for her friends are without number, and all will grieve to know she has joined the long line of early Hills pioneers who are fast disappearing from the city whose history they wrote.
