Deadwood Evening Independent, Tuesday, December 3, 1895, page 2: Joe Ashton, the unfortunate young man who had his hands and feet so badly frozen yesterday afternoon, is at the home of his sister, Mrs. Tortatt, in Lead, where he is receiving all the attention that can be bestowed upon him. The doctors have no hope of saving the frozen members, although they though that his condition was better this morning than last night. Joe has been an object of pity for several years past, being a victim of dring (sic) and having no control over his appetite. He is as good hearted a man as ever breathed the breath of life, but he has been a most bitter enemy of himself, and his dissipation has proved so disastrous that it has affected his brain and made a total wreck of him physically as well as mentally. His horrible condition is deplored by all and words of pity are everywhere heard for the poor fellow. Black Hills Daily Times, Saturday, December 7, 1895, page 2: Joe Ashton Dead Joe Ashton, the unfortunate young man who was so severely frozen through exposure last Sunday night, died at his sister’s home in Lead yesterday at 4:30 p.m. Drs. Dickinson and Freeman have been unremitting in their attention to him and yesterday morning decided it to be absolutely necessary to amputate both hands and feet, as mortification was liable to set in at any moment. The operations were successfully performed at 11 a.m., the patient enduring them without any visible pain or shock and recovered in a very satisfactory manner. Up to 3 p.m. he was quite rational, but did not seem to realize his crippled condition. Shortly after the hour mentioned he became restless and uneasy, finally culminating in one of those spasms with which he has been afflicted since being frozen. The attack was more severe than any of the preceding ones and was more than his hold on life could stand. At 4:20 p.m. his spirit passed to its Maker. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the mother of the deceased and his two sisters, Mrs. J.B. Tortatt and Mrs. J.B. Curtis, all three of whom reside in Lead. Joe had just reached his 30th year and was a bright and able young man, whose friends are to be found in every section of the Hills Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made, but will be announced later. Deadwood Evening Independent, Monday, December 9, 1894, page 2: A large number of people attended the funeral services of Joe Ashton at the home of the sister of the deceased, Mrs. John Tortatt. Rev. Ware officiated. The remains were interred in the South Lead cemetery.
