MONTGOMERY: Through the death of Mrs. Samuel Montgomery, which took place last Friday, Jan. 28th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Smith, Orangeville loses one of its old and respected citizens. She was the daughter of the late James Hudson and was born at Purple Hill in the year 1841 when Orangeville consisted of a few hamlets and all around was wilderness. She was married at the age of 20 to the late Isaac Hunter and raised a family of 13, 6 boys and 7 girls. Mr. Hunter predeceased her 32 years ago and after three years she remarried the late Samuel Montgomery, who died in 1914. Mrs. Montgomery was of a kind disposition, and always ready day or night to help a neighbor in distress. When doctors were scarce in the sixties she took her place at giving what help she could in her own limited way, always bringing cheer with her. She had a great sense of humor and ever enjoyed a joke, even to the last. Many time she would relate to the writer, the hardships the young women in those days had on the farm; often taking the youngest baby to the fields in a basket. While her husband cradled the grain, she bound it in sheaves. Few were the early settlers' pleasures, with fewer comforts, to what young women have today. She had a host of stories to tell of life in the woods, which were ever interesting and as each old settler passed away these stories gradually disappear. Nine of her family are alive, with 47 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, who deeply mourn her loss. She was a Presbyterian all her life, but had broad views on religions, and had a host of friends of all the different sects. We all feel we have lost a friend in her passing to the great beyond. The sons are: James Hunter, of Barker, N. Y., David H. of Toronto, John S. of Minot, North Dakota, and Edmond Isaac of Manyberries, Alta. The daughters are: Mrs. Walter Smith, The Maples, Mrs. Jane Madill, Caledon East, Mrs. W. J. Smith, Caledon Lake, Mrs. J. H. Nichol, Montreal, Quebec, Mrs. J. J. Nicholson, Medicine Hat, Alta. Mrs. James Hicks of Weston is a sister of the late Mrs. Montgomery and is the only surviving member of the Huston family. The funeral took place to Greenwood cemetery on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. Rev. W. M. Morris conducted an impressive service at the house and grave. The pallbearers were six grandsons, the deceased having expressed a wish that they should bear her to her last resting place, Cecil, Leonard and Roy Smith, C. A. Madill, Ed. Lain and Bell Hicks.
