Visitation was Sunday night, March 3, 2013, from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton. Mrs. Radosti died Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at Avera Creighton Care Centre in Creighton. Elizabeth "Betty" Faye Radosti, daughter of Dent Absalom and Elva (Elwood) Van Deveer, was born August 4, 1921, at a farm 3 1/2 miles south of Creighton. She attended Creighton Public School, and was active in music, playing trombone in the town band, which practiced in the city hall, and violin in the orchestra. She had a beautiful soprano voice and did solo and small group work. In 1934 at age 13 she and Marie Foreman sang a duet using megaphones at the outdoor dedication of the Knox County Courthouse in Center. At the music contest at Wayne she was told she was a coloratura soprano. She sang at many places in her life, including a solo at the age of 5 at her pastor’s request at the Baptist church, church choir and solos at the Congregational-Baptist church, weddings, and at a Norfolk radio station. She graduated in 1938 at age 16. Her father thought she was too young to leave home, so she worked at the American National Bank for two years. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City majoring in vocal music, and then worked at the Livestock National Bank in Sioux City. When World War II started she enlisted in the Navy and became a WAVE, attending boot camp at Hunter College in the Bronx, New York, and yeoman school at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was sent to San Francisco to the Armed Guard Center on Treasure Island. There she met her future husband, Joseph Louis Radosti, and they were married November 9, 1945, and honeymooned in Carmel-by-the-Sea. When Joe got out of the Navy they went to Creighton to await the birth of her niece, Merry Otradovsky, to be her godparents. Then they moved to New Orleans, Joe’s hometown. She worked for the Louisiana State Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Their daughter Susan Faye was born there. In 1949 they moved to Nebraska to live in Betty’s recently deceased grandmother’s home. She again worked at the American National Bank until her son Van Joseph was born, at which time her husband began working at the bank. Betty loved to dance. During high school if a boy didn’t know how to dance, they would tell him to go dance with Betty, because she would teach him. They would dance in the back of the Sweet Shop that was next to the Lyric Theater. Other interests were reading, knitting, doing needlepoint, and traveling. Her family visited Joe’s family in New Orleans almost every year. She and Joe attended bankers’ conventions in many places. Betty was not athletic, but she still bowled with Joe in Couple’s League and would join him at couple’s events at the Plainview Country Club. She did enjoy exercising though, and started biking with Deloreis Blunck in her 50s. When she was 57 she was jogging six miles around the track every morning, seven miles when she was 58, and added a mile each year until she was 60. She continued exercising daily on equipment at her home, and credited her exercise program for her good health and long life. She was a member of P.E.O., Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, the Creighton Public Library Foundation Board, Creighton Historical Society, and was a charter member of the Book Club led by Margaret McGill. She attended a prayer group led by Vera Anderson Wednesday mornings at the Episcopal Church, and later attended a Bible study led by Carolyn Doerr. After Joe’s death in 1996 she and Martha Roh started going to Shaffer’s Mini Mart every morning for cappuccino. They were soon joined by Mary Kocina, and then many others who still meet there most mornings. Betty loved and enjoyed being with her immediate family, especially her granddaughters, and her extended family, both hers and Joe’s. She cherished her friends, and loved her community, her state, and her country. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Radosti of Paullina, Iowa, and Creighton, Nebraska; her son, Van Radosti of Sioux City and his three daughters, Adrianna (Zach Hannel) Radosti of Lafayette, Indiana, Kathryn Radosti of Chicago, and Genny Radosti of Sioux City; her brother, Warren Cummings (Phyllis) of Bonsall, California; her sisters-in-law, Carol Barlow (Pete) of Slidell, Louisiana, Barbara Radosti of Georgetown, Texas, and Evelyn Sahuque of New Orleans; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister Margery Otradovsky; and her brothers-in-law, Charles Otradovsky, Ray Radosti, and Jerry Radosti.
