Van Deveer, longtime Creighton resident, banker and civic leader, died at his home Sunday morning following a heart attack. He Was 76 years old. His grandchildren, Susan and Van Radosti, had taken him down town for breakfast. Later he returned to their home to look at some newborn kittens. After that he returned to his own home and took a nap, part of his usual routine the past several months. When his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Otradovsky, stopped at the Van Deveer home about 11 o'clock, they found him on the floor by the bed. It appeared he had roused up when he heard them arrive a short time earlier, had sat on the edge of the bed and then suffered the attack. He had been in failing health for several months and for the past 10 weeks or so had spent much of the time at home. Mr. Van Deveer joined the American National Bank in 1930, when it was organized. He was asked to assist because he knew the conditions and people of a wide area. He agreed to help out for 18 months--and has been with the bank ever since. In January 1940, he was elected cashier and took over the management of the institution. He was also serving as secretary of the bank's board of directors at the time of his death. He was a past president of Group 3 of the Nebraska Bankers Association. Mr. Van Deveer was active in civic affairs. He served on the board of education for more than 37 years, resigning last October because of health. He was secretary of the board most of that time. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and served until recently as treasurer of the Creighton Development Corporation. He was a member of the board of Greenwood Cemetery Association at the time of his death. He served on numerous special committees during the years. He was one of the leaders of the fund raising drive for Lundberg Memorial Hospital and was chairman of the hospital board at the time of his death. For many years he headed the invitation committee for the Chamber of Commerce's annual Farmers' Night. Mr. Van Deveer was a member of the Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star. Mr. Van Deveer was born June 28, 1890, at Stella, Nebr., a son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Van Deveer. In 1909 he came with his parents to Creighton and assisted them on the farm south of town for a few years. Later he entered business in Creighton, operating a car agency prior to becoming associated with the bank. He attended the Stella Public School and a business college at Lincoln. On June 26, 1912, he married Miss Elva E. Elwood at Creighton. Two daughters were born to them, Mrs. Charles (Margery) Otradovsky and Mrs. Joe (Betty) Radosti, both of Creighton, who survive. He is also survived by seven grandchildren [Betty Lou, Bob, Merry, David and Trudy Otradovsky; Susan and Van Radosti] and one great grandchild [Traci Otradovsky]. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Hengstler's Chapel with the Rev. Paul Sawtell of Omaha and the Rev. Helmut Kienitz, officiating. The former was pastor years ago of the old Baptist Church here and the Rev. Kienitz is pastor of the Grace Bible Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers are James Burt, Lawrence Condon, Virgil Jackson, Guy James, Joe Manion and Dean Mosher. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. W.E. Wright, Wid Turner, A.W. Hengstler, George Wulff, James Saloum, Jess Tepner, Wm. A. Dow and Roscoe Rice. Extracted from: The Creighton News 11 May 1967 A note from his granddaughter, as told to her by her mother: Dent started selling Hudson-Essex cars in the early 1920s. A salesman came in to sell him covers for him to give to his customers to put on the wheel that was attached to the back of the cars, and he wanted to put Dent's last name on the covers. He advised Dent that if he separated his last name and capitalized the D as well as the V, it would look better. From then on Dent changed his name from Vandeveer to Van Deveer, and his wife and two daughters spelled their name that way as well. Dent's parents, William Allen and Mary Elizabeth (Van Kirk) Vandeveer, continued to spell theirs as one word with one capital, as most of their ancestors and relatives had.
