Elizabeth Funk was born in Green County, Pennsylvania July 25, 1824, and died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Lester Armstrong, in Winterset, Iowa, March 24, 1911, being 86 years and 8 months old at the time of her death. She was united in marriage to Hugh Ruth, Nov. 12th, 1848, and her husband preceded her to the better world 15 years ago, having died in Madison county in the early part of the year 1890. She came to Iowa in the spring of 1855 with her husband and family, locating on a farm in Johnson county. They came to Madison county in 1875, and for a number of years lived on a farm in Douglas township. To this union there were born six children, two sons and four daughters, three of whom survive her-Mrs. J. E. Aylesworth, of Beatrice, Neb., Mrs. Emma Lohr, of Monroe, Ia., who were in attendance at the funeral, and Charles H. Ruth, of Kelley, Colo., who was unable to come. The other three children were: Mary Belle, who died in infancy; Joseph Ruth died at the age of 30; Ida May McDonald died at the age of 20 years. Grandma Ruth, (as she was commonly called), was converted at the age of 18 and united with the Baptist church of which she was a faithful and consistent member up to the time of her death. Although for several months prior to her death, owing to her decline in health, she has been deprived of church privileges, her faith in Christ never wavered. When she came down to the close of life, with such a strong faith and hope in the God she has tried to faithfully serve for so many years, the evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit with her was so clear that none could doubt the reality of the religion of Jesus Christ. Her whole life of sacrifices and devotion to her family and friends is evidence of her faith in God. She was always willing to answer to the call of the afflicted and suffering ones, and render assistance along any line that was in her power for their relief. Many a weary night has Grandma Ruth spent by the bedside of the sick and suffering ones. And the writer of this obituary is a personal recipient of her tender love and care, and to her is largely indebted for what he is now permitted to enjoy. But she has left a legacy that is priceless-the example of a faithful, Godly life. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer.
