Hugh Ruth was born in Maryland, April 1, 1808, and died January 21, 1896 When a child his parents moved to Washington county, Pennsylvania, where he spent the early years of his life. He was married twice. By each of his wives there were born six children, of whom in each case one son and two daughters are still living. He came to Johnson county, Iowa, in the year 1855, and to Madison county in 1875. Mr. Ruth, in his first wife’s time, was a member of the Methodist church. After his second marriage he united with the Baptist church about the year 1853. He was a man of strong constitution and upright moral character. For the past year and a half he has been very feeble. He often remarked that his one desire was to be ready to meet the Savior. He had a desire to depart and be with Christ. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer. Note: According to some of the children's marriage records, Hugh's first wife was Nancy Job. Nancy died approx. 1845.
