MASON The death of this splendid old citizen occurred at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning, May 14, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B.F. Casteel, on C street in this city. General debility, superinduced by old age, was the cause of death. She had reached the ripe old age of 92 years, 3 months and 18 days, and the final call came more as a benediction than a sacrifice. Mrs. Mason's maiden name was Elizabeth H. Griffin. She was twice married, first to Mr. Tucker, to which union one child was born. After Mr. Tucker's death she was wedded to John H. Mason. Four children came to bless the union, two of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Casteel of this city and Mrs. Mickie Meredith, of Hot Springs, Ark. She was the grandmother of ten and the great-grandmother of twenty children. Deceased was born in St. Francois county, January 23, 1827, and resided here continuously all her life. In early life she united with the Christian church and practically her entire life was consecrated to her Master's work. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, at the Christian church in this city, with Rev. R.I. Allen in charge. Burial was in the family burying grounds, about six miles south of this city." The obituary goes on: "The daughter from Hot Springs, Ark., Mrs. Mickie Meredith, accompanied by her children and grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Meredith and two children, and Roscoe Lanham, arrived early yesterday morning under most distressing conditions, to attend the funeral. They carried with them on their arrival here the dead baby of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Meredith. The infant daughter, only 7 months old, had become suddenly and seriously ill while enroute and died quite suddenly before its serious condition was hardly reazlied." Elizabeth H. Griffin Tucker Mason was married twice: #1 John W. Tucker, on May 4, 1848 in St. Francois County, Mo. They had at least 1 child; Martha J. Tucker b. 1849 Mo #2 John H. Mason (1825-December 1861), on July 30, 1854, in St. Francois Co., Mo. They had at least 2 children who survived to adulthood: 1. Meekee Mason b. 1858 Mo, married twice; #1 was to James F. Lanham. They had one child; Roscoe Conklin Lanham (Roscoe's death certificate: 1882-1924 Hot Springs, Ark. He was a constable in Hot Springs). #2 was to Philip Z. Meredith. Meekee and Philip had at least one son, Luther Meredith. Luther and wife had a daughter, Nellie Levern Meredith who was the infant child who died enroute to the funeral of Elizabeth Mason, mentioned in the obituary above. Per the death certificate of Nellie L. Meredith, she was born October 10, 1918 in Hot Springs, Ark., and died May 15, 1919 on the Missouri-Pacific railroad enroute from Hot Springs, Ark., to St. Francois Co., Mo. Nellie is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Hot Springs, Ark. 2. Mary Elizabeth Mason. Married Benjamin Franklin Casteel and had at least four children; Fred (or Ferd), Barney F., Maud, and Gilbert.
