Description	:	Elizabeth Mae Gittins Tipton Elizabeth Mae was born north of Williamsburg on the Gittins farm January 23, 1884 to William Richard(12/27/1848-02/22/1929) and Sarah Gates Gittins(01/01/1848-04/08/1898). She attended school and would graduate High School twice from Williamsburg, Iowa. The first time on May 30, 1901 completing the Latin course and the second time June 11, 1903 completing the teacher’s course. Mae as she went by not Elizabeth had a thirst for knowledge attending Drake University in Des Moines. Her father W.R. writes proudly in his diary when he and his second wife Rebecca went to Des Moines to attend her graduation ceremony... The first time on May 30, 1901 completing the Latin course and the second time June 11, 1903 completing the teacher’s course. Mae as she went by not Elizabeth had a thirst for knowledge attending Drake University in Des Moines. Her father W.R. writes proudly in his diary when he and his second wife Rebecca went to Des Moines to attend her graduation ceremony on May 16, 1909. June 14, 1916 Mae would marry Reverend Robert Tipton(born 05/18/1885 in Cardiff Wales died 07/02/1975 in Muscogee, Georgia) in the W.R. Gittins house. They lived in Williamsburg for a while and had two daughters Mary(02/1917-05/31/2010) and Helen(03/06/1918-??) who were born here in Williamsburg as well. The family lived in a variety of places and Mae worked for Johnson and Johnson for a period of time. She would return to Iowa on occasion to visit her sister Susan Ann Gittins Jones(05/30/1886-09/07/1964) and stay for a week or so. Mae and Robert lived in New Jersey where she passed away January 3, 1971. Her ashes were returned here to Iowa in July of 1971 by her niece Anna Beth Jones and she was buried next to her mother Sarah at Oak Hill Cemetery with a simple graveside service attended by nieces and nephews, in an unmarked grave.
