Abram Jones conducting the services at the church and the Rebekahs taking charge at the grave. The following obituary notice was prepared and read by Rev. T.C. McFarland: Mrs. W.R. Gittins, who on last Friday afternoon was called from her toils and burdens, was born in Gettysburgh, Darke County, Ohio on the 1st day of January, 1848. Her maiden name was Sarah Gates and she was one of a family of eleven children, nine of whom survive her to mourn her loss. With her family she removed to the neighborhood of West Liberty, in Muscatine county, Iowa. In October 1865, where she lived until she was married to W.R. Gittins(12/27/1848-02/22/1929), which occurred on the 18th of January 1883. Immediately after her marriage she came with her husband to Williamsburg, Iowa, where she has ever since resided. For considerable time past she was in failing health, and last autumn she went to Southern Kansas to spend the winter there, hoping that the change of climate might be beneficial to her health. The hope however which her friends cherished about her restoration to health were not to be fulfilled. She gained no permanent benefit from the change of climate; the disease which had taken hold of her was beyond the reach of human remedies; and a few weeks ago she was brought back to her home in this city and grew steadily worse, until the end came on last Friday afternoon. She made a brave fight, and was patient and hopeful even in the midst of great physical suffering to the very last, but the Master had willed it otherwise, and so after a long and distressing illness she peacefully entered into her rest, leaving a husband and two children to mourn the loss of a wife and mother. In her early live she mad a profession of her faith in Christ and united with the Evangelical church, and after coming to Williamsburg united with the Congregational church of this place, with which she remained identified until her death. During the fifteen years that she lived in the community she has enjoyed the confidence and esteem and kind sympathy of all who knew her. (Her obituary goes on with the service). CARD OF THANKS. We hereby extend our heartfelt thanks to our kind neighbors and friends and the ladies of the Rebekah lodge for their assistance and sympathy during the sickness, death and burial of our loved wife and mother. W.R. Gittins and Children Note: Sarah died of consumption also known as Tuberculosis. Her daughters were young at the time of her death, Mae was 14 and Susan 11. Her parents Rev. Peter Gates and Elizabeth Frank Gates and one brother Jacob Gates preceded her in death.
