Description	:	Elizabeth Painter, a daughter of Mary (née Bland) and the Rev. Joshua Painter, was born probably on 25 January 1828 in Zane Township, Logan County, Ohio. Joshua Painter was enumerated in 1820 and 1830 in that township, and identified in 1836 probate records as: "Joshua Painter Late of Zane Township." Elizabeth lost both of her parents when she was a child, and she likely grew up in the Zane Township household of her step-mother, Lydia Painter (née Lewallen), who married John Bishop in 1840 in Logan County. Joshua Painter, was born probably on 25 January 1828 in Zane Township, Logan County, Ohio. Joshua Painter was enumerated in 1820 and 1830 in that township, and identified in 1836 probate records as: "Joshua Painter Late of Zane Township." Elizabeth lost both of her parents when she was a child, and she likely grew up in the Zane Township household of her step-mother, Lydia Painter (née Lewallen), who married John Bishop in 1840 in Logan County. Elizabeth Painter and James G. Wallingsford were married on 4 July 1846 in Champaign County, Ohio. The couple was enumerated in 1850 in Logan County's Richland Township, and in 1851 posted a letter from Huntsville in Logan County's McArthur Township, immediately south of Richland Township. James G. and Elizabeth Wallingsford, with their two young children William Franklin and Sarah Frances, traveled during October 1852 from near Huntsville to Iowa, arriving on 27 October 1852 at a location 12 miles west of Muscatine, county seat of Muscatine County, Iowa. (This location is in Pike Township.) The couple and their children were enumerated in 1856, 1860 and 1870 in Muscatine County. Elizabeth and James G. James G. Wallingsford died in 1878. Elizabeth Painter Wallingford and L. N. B. Carpenter were married on 25 November 1883 in Guthrie Center, Guthrie County, Iowa. According to the marriage license, Elizabeth was age 58, born in Ohio; the daughter of "Mary Blan" and J. Painter. L. N. B. (Lucian Napoleon Bonaparte) was age 75, born in Vermont, an "ex-farmer"; the son of Hannah Whitney and Benj. Carpenter. This was the second marriage for both parties. Sometime after the death of her second husband, Elizabeth returned to Muscatine County, and died in Altalissa. "On Thursday, April 15, at the home of her son, Harry Wallingford, occurred the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Wallingford, after a painful lingering illness of several months. The funeral was held Saturday morning at the Christian church with Rev. Kern of Wapello conducting the services, and burial in East Oakridge cemetery in West Liberty. "Miss Elizabeth Painter was born in Sidney, Ohio, January 25, 1828, [sic] living to the advanced age of eighty-six years, two months, and three weeks. Early in life she moved to Iowa and married J. G. Wallingford, who preceded her in death about thirty-five years. Mrs. Wallingford, in Iowa, lived a number of years in Guthrie, several in West Liberty and has spent the last three years in Atalissa with her son Harry and wife. She leaves to mourn her loss four sons, Harry and Clinton of Atalissa; Joseph of Perry; Charles of Arlington, Nebr., and five daughters, Mrs. Arthur Romaine and Mrs. Carter of West Liberty; Mrs. Joe Gregg of Colorado Springs; Mrs. Minne Green of Menio, and Mrs. Lide Cain of Browning, Mo." Notes Place of birth: Although Mrs. Elizabeth Wallingford's obit. reports Sidney in Shelby County, Ohio, no known record of Joshua Painter connects him with either that village or county. Date of birth: The year of birth is in question. Mrs. Elizabeth Wallingford's obit. states that she was born on 25 Jan 1823, and died on 15 Apr 1909 at the age of 86 years, 2 months, and 3 weeks (21 days)—yielding by calculation the same date of birth. Her headstone inscription shows the same date of death with the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 20 days, yielding by calculation 26 Jan 1825—the same date of birth of her brother Jacob as reported in his obit. A 1905 local interest item in a newspaper (see below) states that her brother Jacob was 2 years her senior, suggesting that she was born in 1827. Calculations of year of birth from her census enumerations range from 1823 to 1828, but the earliest in 1850 shows her to be age 22—born in 1828 (the year her mother died). Given that her last child was born in 1877, the later, 1828, date of birth seems more likely: she would have been age 49 when her last child was born.
