She had been suffering a decline for some time, which was brought on by her old age. Nine weeks ago she was obliged to take to her bed from which she was never to rise. Elizabeth Townsend Wood was born in Belmont County, Ohio, July 1, 1821, thus being at the time of her death 82 years and 21 days of age. She was married September 25, 1844 to Joseph Mosher Wood, whose death (July 25, 1886) preceded hers within three days of seventeen years. She was a member of the Society of Friends and held to that faith throughout her life. Before the Civil War, she did a great deal to help grant freedom to the colored man. After the war, she spent three years in the South to assist in Negro education.* She was quiet in her religion, kind in her family, and always greatly interested in any benevolent enterprise or philanthropic movement." She leaves three daughters, Mrs F.B. Fell of this place, Mrs D.M. Helfer of Akron, Ohio and Mrs. Olive Wood Hartley of Superior, Wisconsin, to revere the memory of a kind and loving mother. The funeral was held at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Wood Fell, on Friday afternoon. The services were conducted by Reverend W.H. Doner." * Spent three years at a school in Woodlawn, Fairfax, Virgina around 1867-1870 that was set up by the Friends of Philadelphia.
