West Branch Local Record, August 5, 1886 From the Clarence Sun we clip the following obituary notice, the subject being a former resident and having relatives and many friends in this locality. Called Home. Sunday morning the winged messenger of death bore the spirit of Mr. J. M. Wood to its future home. He had been suffering from illness by spells for about two years, and nearly eight weeks ago was obliged to take to his bed from which death released him, the cause being cerebral meningitis. About the time of his being confined to his bed his three daughters were present making his last family reunion on earth. He was born in Morrow county, Ohio, July 12th., 1824, and past his sixty second mile post in life two weeks ago last Monday. He often expressed a wish to see this anniversary of his birth and it was granted him. He was a member of the Society of Friends, and before the war was a staunch supporter of every movement for granting freedom to the colored man and after the war spent three years in the south, accompanied by his good wife, in educating the freedmen, at a great financial loss to himself. His broad philanthropic views and the quiet manner in which the good work he undertook was accomplished, characteristic of the religion which he professed, won friends for him everhwere. He was a firm friend of temperence, and living out of the life he preached in every line, cast from himself every reproach. He came to Iowa about thirty-three years ago, residing most of the time in the eastern part. His wife and three daughters survive him to revere the memory of a kind husband and loving father. The daughter are Mrs. F. B. Fell, living near here, Mrs. Walter Hartley, of Northwood, and Mrs. D. M. Helfer Akron, Ohio. the funeral services occurred at the late home of the deceased, Rev. Milner officiating, and in many respects conducted in a manner to comply with his requests after his calm resignation to the fact that death was about to claim him. Beautiful flowers, wrought in many appropriate designs, were brought by loving friends in memory of his great love for these beauties of the earthly kingdom.
