James Shropshire was a close neighbor and associate who witnessed the will of Peter Turley. It is possible that this James Shropshire was a brother of Elizabeth and a brother-in-law of Peter Turley. Among Peter and Elizabeth Turley's granddaughters were Mary Hiatt Pope and Elizabeth Shropshire Lowry. Mary Hiatt Pope's granddaughter Courtenay Fraser Fite stated that her grandmother Mary Hiatt Pope Fraser (daughter of Margaret Turley Pope Fraser) was named Hiatt for her own grandmother Elizabeth Hiatt Turley, who was a daughter of George & Martha Wakefield Hiatt, Quakers, and that Elizabeth was "read out of the church for marrying outside faith." No record confirming any such banishment has been found, although Quaker records usually revel in details of banishment. Mary Hiatt Pope was the daughter of Margaret Turley who married Rev. Jesse Pope, son of George Whitfield Pope, a nephew of George & Martha Wakefield Hiatt who were both Quaker ministers. So if Elizabeth Turley was indeed a Hiatt or the daughter of Elizabeth Hiatt, then Margaret Turley married her cousin (ref., The Williams Family of S.C. & Miss. [1954] by John Ben Perry Jr.; The Samuel Jones Family Book 2 by Hazel Parker Jones). It may also be that Courtenay Fite was confusing one pair of grandparents with the other. Elizabeth Hiatt, daughter of George and Martha Wakefield Hiatt, was born Nov. 22, 1745 at Fairfax Monthly Meeting, Loudon Co., VA. Peter Turley was born c1755, or 10 years after Elizabeth Hiatt. While possible, it is unlikely because Peter and Elizabeth Turley's first child was born circa 1780. Elizabeth Hiatt was 35 years old before Elizabeth Turley's first child was born. It is more likely that Elizabeth Hiatt Shropshire was the mother of Elizabeth Shropshire Turley if the latter were born circa 1765. James Shropshire who witnessed the will of Peter Turley may have been James Shropshire Jr. or Sr. James Shropshire Sr. who married Elizabeth (Hiatt?) was a son of Walter Shropshire (1729-1810) of Kershaw County, S.C. (son of St. John Shropshire), and Sarah Willis (1734-1816). Family trees online show Sarah was the daughter of John Willis (1710-1762) and wife Elizabeth Plunkett (1715-1798) who was the daughter of John Plunkett (b.c1685) and Frances Frank (1688-1750), daughter of Robert Frank Jr. (1688-1725) and wife Sarah Marshall (1680-1725), the daughter of Thomas Marshall (1655-1704) and Martha Sherwood (1662-1749). If Elizabeth Turley was a sister of James Shropshire Sr., Elizabeth Turley’s mtDNA should match Martha Sherwood’s. If she was Elizabeth Hiatt Turley as has been written, or the daughter of Elizabeth Hiatt Shropshire as has been theorized, by either of these scenarios her mtDNA would match Martha Wakefield Hiatt. Note that Martha Wakefield Hiatt's daughter Lydia Hiatt Hunt Hoggatt was first married to Uriah Hunt. Elizabeth Turley's son James Turley bequeathed property in his own will to Nancy Hunt, no relationship stated.
