(Reed) Walter [1845-1905] Death Notice The Washington Times (Wash, DC), 29 Aug 1894 The suicide of Miss Elizabeth Walter, an account of which was published in The Times yesterday, was later investigated by Coroner Hammett, who decided that an inquest was unnecessary. Miss Walter resided with her uncle at No 59 Defrees Street, and her home and surroundings were as pleasant as those of most girls who have to work for their living. She returned from a two weeks' visit to her parents at Barnesville, Montgomery County, Md., on Friday last, when she seemed to be much cast down on account of the ill health of her mother. On Saturday and Sunday she appeared a little more cheerful and on Monday morning went as usual to Kann & Co.'s store, where she was employed. During the day she told a young lady friend, who is employed in the same store, that she had two bottles of laudanum in her trunk and that she had a notion to take the contents of one of them as she was tired of living. The young lady addressed did not think that Miss Walter meant what she said, but still she tried to convince her that living was preferable to dying, and this seemed to put Miss Walter in better spirits. Later in the evening, however, Miss Walter changed her mind, and about 10 o'clock swallowed the contents of one of the bottles. She soon began to breathe heavily and this attracted the attention of her uncle, who sent after Drs. Bond and Barnes. Although they did all in their power to stay the effects of the drug, their efforts were unavailing, and the unfortunate girl died shortly after midnight. Buried on August 29, 1894
