Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma with the Rev. Paul Ferrarone officiating. Burial will be at Alma Cemetery. Brugh of Lake Forest, Calif.; daughter, Janet Smolik of Alma; grandchildren, Carmen Heft and her husband, Kevin, of Alma, Allen Brugh and his wife, Teri, of rural Alma, Sara Mercer and her husband, Keith, of Des Moines, Iowa, Tim Brugh and his wife, Tanya, of Emerald Hills, Calif., Kirsten Lynch and her husband, Tom, of Irvine, Calif., Annette Templeton and her husband, Tim, of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Anton "Tony" Smolik and his wife, Debra, of Alma; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Karl "Jim" Fischer of Auburn; sisters, Jeanette Warren of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Maye Dorn of Minden; sister-in-law, Dorothy Fischer of Kearney; and other relatives and many friends. She was the second of seven children in her family. Ella was baptized at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hildreth on June 4, 1916. As a young adult she was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma. The family moved to a farm north of the old Republican City. While growing up, she attended Gorman Rural School District 72 near Republican City in Harlan County and high school at Republican City where she graduated with the class of 1933. The Great Depression curtailed her dream of attending Kearney State Teachers College. Instead, she worked as a seamstress for several families in Alma, often in return for her boarding. She and Louis were married at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma. The family made their home on the Brugh family farmstead in the Huntley community. Within four years they moved to their own farm across the road from the original homestead. There, they raised their four children who all attended Huntley School. Sadly, their youngest child, Dennis, died in a car accident at age 16 on March 12, 1966. Louis and Ella retired and moved to Alma in 1971. She had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Society Home since Aug. 15, 2006. Ella's favorite activities included hours with family and many quiet afternoons reading books mailed to her from a book club. She was consumed with current events and outspoken in her political opinions on them. She became a master of her sewing machine and created beautiful clothes for herself and her family. She was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church where she served as Sunday school teacher and officer of the American Lutheran Church Women. She enjoyed the KK Extension Club in Huntley, and in 1971 she became the District C director for the Nebraska State Extension Council. She enjoyed traveling and bowling. Missing Louis, she purchased a winter home in Mesa, Ariz., where she and he spent many happy vacations. After his death she loved living the winter months there. Ultimately there was nothing more important to Ella than her family and friends. She moved back to Alma and spent her remaining years at Hillcrest Terrace and Colonial Villa. In addition to her youngest son and her husband, she was preceded in death by her father on Jan. 2, 1967; her mother on Feb. 12, 1989; sisters, Doris Haussermann and her husband, Ernest, and Nora Rawson and her husband, James; brother, Robert "Bud" Fischer; sister-in-law, Shirley Fischer; brother-in-law, George Dorn; granddaughter, Julie Brugh; and son-in-law, Harold Smolik on Sept. 30, 2012.
