Description	:	"Mrs. Ellen Frances Sheppard Mrs. Ellen Frances Sheppard, age 75 years, passed away this morning at 5:15 o'clock at her home, 611 Seventh avenue, after gradually declining health for some months. Last evening she sat on the porch until 8 o'clock watching her little grandson at his play was assisted into the house and to bed about 9 o'clock. Ellen Frances Spaulding was born in Ireland, November 7, 1844 and came as a mere child to America, passing her early years in Boston. She came to Iowa in 1866 and had made her home in Clinton since that time. There are left to mourn the devout Christian mother one daughter and five sons. J.L. Clarke of Clinton, Mrs. J.A. Laughlin of Elkhart, Indiana, Charles Sheppard of Humphrey Neb., Thomas Sheppard of Rochester, Minn., James and John Sheppard of Clinton, also many grandchildren, and a brother Thomas Spaulding, also of this city." Clinton, Clinton, Iowa Ellen F. Spaulding Clarke Sheppard was born in Roscommon, Ireland although I have not found a baptism record. Ellen, her brother Michael and her father immigrated to Boston and settle in Haverhill, Essex, Mass. Her father married Margaret Mitchell where her brother Thomas Henry and sister Mary Spaulding were born. In Roscommon, Ireland the family name was Spollen, an rare name, but when her father Patrick naturalized he signed his name Patrick Spellman. After his death the family used Spaulding. Ellen married Peter Clarke, a native of Co. Mayo, Ireland. They had two sons John Leo and Peter Vincent and two daughters Mary F. and Maggie. Both girls died around age 1. After Peter Clarke died Ellen married James T. Sheppard. Their children were Elizabeth, Gertrude, Hannah T., Charles, Thomas and Theresa. (Both Hannah T. and Theresa died as children.) This grave stone picture is probably NOT for Ellen Spaulding but for Bridget Ryan Sheppard.
