Adam Sun, Bingen, WA., June 28, 1956, page 10 Following a month of hospitalization with a severe stroke Ellis Talmadge Breedlove passed away at Barnes hospital, Vancouver, June 14. Ellis Breedlove was a pioneer to the Northwest. He loved the rugged country and the soil was his whole life. To grow things was such a satisfaction and pride that he never ceased to take an interest in it though his health began to fail and the actual working with the soil grew difficult to continue. He was born in Franklin, N.C., June 13, 1892 and came to the Northwest with his parents, the Bennett Breedloves in 1905 when he was a lad of 13. On June 30, 1919 in Portland he was united and marriage to Anna M. Boersig. The young couple began their married life at their ranch on Northwestern Lake with the goal of mixed farming. Ellis always took a great deal of interest in his farming and would strive to see just how big he could raise his crops. One summer he raised two sweet potatoes weighing 6 pounds which were taken from the same hill. That same year he grew 250 pounds from one pound of seed. Strawberries were a specialty with Ellis. He has known the high yield of 350 crates of choice berries per acre. He had to his credit 9 and 10 tons of alfalfa per acre and cut the same three acre tract four times in one season. He will be remembered for the production of it 600 to 800 bags of onions per acre and 100 pounds to the bag. Unable to obtain electricity for his place in 1928 he put in his own electrical equipment to supply enough power for the barn and house with all the then known appliances. The plant is still in use today. In 1950 Ellis was appointed a Fire Warden of Skamania County and served in that capacity until 1951. But this did not mean that he gave up his interest in farming. Even though his health was failing he continued an active work, though that grew difficult, in every day chores of farming. On Sept. 3, 1918 Ellis Breedlove enlisted in the United States army at Goldendale. He served as a private in the 113th Squadron ASAP until his discharge on January 16, 1919. Ellis enjoyed traveling too. In 1952 he and his wife made a plane trip to visit friends and relatives in the southwestern states. This was one of his choicest memories and was a part of his conversation for years afterwards. On Saturday, May 12 at an auction in The Dalles, Ellis Breedlove became ill and was taken home. At that time his condition was not considered alarming. On the Monday following, May 14, he again became ill and was admitted to Skyline where it was determined that he had suffered a stroke. The next day, Tuesday May 15 he was transferred to the veterans hospital in Vancouver where he gradually fell into a coma, paralyzed and unable to speak, until Thursday in June 14 when he passed away. He left many pleasant memories and a host of friends behind him. Surviving him are his widow, Anna, one son, Delbert, White Salmon; three daughters, Mrs. Delores Garrett, W.S.; Mrs. Lorraine Palmer, Elgin, Ore., Mrs. Marian Lehmann, Salem, Ore., seven grand children, four sisters, Mrs. Joe Vezina, Mrs. John Loeffel, W.S.; Mrs. Dudley Hixson, Beaverton, Ore.; Mrs. O.L. Wilson, Portland; three brothers, Jack, White Salmon; Lawrence, Vancouver, Cleveland, Stiless, N.C. Services were held at Gardner's, Saturday, June 16, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mr. George officiating. Burial was in the Odd Fellow cemetery at White Salmon. To the following men who served as pall bearers Mrs. Breedlove and her family wish to extend special thanks: Earl Fields, Ervin Powell, Orie Kreps, Jim Kiley, Colonel Walker, and Howard Ericson.
