Description	:	The daughter of Albert Frank and Charlotta Petermeier Polhamus, Elma Polhamus was born Jan.1, 1899 near Melbourne. She was raised on their family farm and attended rural schools. Elma married Benjamin Lester Adkins, Nov 15, 1922 in Newton. She and her husband worked as farmers in Jasper County. Mrs. Adkins was a member of the Hickory Grove Church, Victor Grange, Golden Agers of Newton, and the Newton Senior Citizens. Mrs. Adkins was a member of the Hickory Grove Church, Victor Grange, Golden Agers of Newton, and the Newton Senior Citizens. In 1975 Mrs. Adkins moved to Newton and in October of 1997 she moved to Grinnell. She died of congestive heart failure at the age of 99 on Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell. Survivors include a son, Morris D. of Oceanside, Calif.; three daughters, Gweneth J. Schmidt of Victorville, Calif., Colleen M. Wiley of Grinnell, and Beverly J. Wertz of Newton; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert Polhamus of Manson and Lloyd "Bud" Polhamus of Newton; and three sisters, Minnie Hawk of Victorville, Calif., Avis Kreager of Newton, and Vic Balmer of Kellogg. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a granddaughter, a sister, and two brothers. A visitation with the family present was held Friday, July 17, 1994 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Graveside services were held Saturday, July 18, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell after 9 a.m. Friday where family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials to the Kellogg Historical Society or the Hickory Grove Church were accepted in Elma's name.
