Elton Gottlieb Gehring was born June 9, 1928, in Parkston, SD, to Emanuel and Marie (Winter) Gehring. He attended high school in Tripp, SD. At age 17, Elton joined the US Navy, serving during World War II. Following his discharge, he began a career as a tuck driver at Dan Dugan Trucking in Sioux Falls. He was united in marriage to Elsie Brandt on November 6, 1949, in Avon, SD. At the escalation of the Korean War, Elton was called back to service in the US Navy. Following his active duty, he returned to his career at Dan Dugan. Elton retired in 1985, after a 35 year career. He then worked part time with Chapel Craft Products. In his younger years, Elton enjoyed playing softball on the church league, playing cards, and going pheasant hunting with family members. The Gehring family also liked camping in the summer months, and particularly enjoyed trips to Yellowstone and Canada. Elton was blessed with a compassionate and kind spirit. A supportive father and faithful husband, Elton loved spending time with his family. He cherished his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Elsie L. Gehring, Sioux Falls; son, Bruce E. Gehring (Dar), Rochester, MN; daughter, Bonnie L. Bruggeman, Brandon, SD, Becky L. Wittrock, Sioux Falls; son-in-law, Allan Husby, Watertown; five grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; sister, Violet Hieb, Elk Point, SD; and former son-in-law, Mike Wittrock, Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara Husby; son-in-law, Gene Bruggeman; sister, Laura Brandt; and brothers, Max and Alvin. Memorial services will begin at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. The burial will precede the funeral service and will be held at noon, Tuesday at Hills of Rest Memorial Park, with the procession leaving from Miller Funeral Home at 11:45. Visitation begins at noon, Monday with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Monday evening at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. Contributor: Volunteer Contributor (47523251)
