Bud was born on May 8, 1926, in Brewster to Hoke and Emily Smith. He grew up and graduated high school in Brewster in 1943. He entered into the U.S. Navy upon graduation, and served for two years as Gunnery Instructor at Pear Harbor in Hawaii. After the War, Bud returned home and worked on the farm. "Bud" Smith, of Brewster, WA, went to his eternal rest with the Lord on March 20, 2012. Bud was born on May 8, 1926, in Brewster to Hoke and Emily Smith. He grew up and graduated high school in Brewster in 1943. He entered into the U.S. Navy upon graduation, and served for two years as Gunnery Instructor at Pear Harbor in Hawaii. After the War, Bud returned home and worked on the farm. He met and married Viola Jackson in May of 1954. They were together for 46 years, before Vi passed away in June of 2000. Bud worked all his life raising cattle and later, had an orchard on a ranch just outside of Brewster. He also worked construction with the County, Godbey Red-E-Mix and every Hydro-Electric Dam project on the Columbia River. Bud loved life and especially loved having his nieces and nephews come and visit or even live with him and Vi on the ranch. He was especially proud to have Lance Roberts, his nephew, live with him and Vi for many years. He lived life with a blessing, after surviving two open heart surgeries and one laser heart surgery since 1976. He particularly loved the summers later in life, as his granddaughter, Kristen, would spend every summer with them. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and the Grange Society. Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; and two sisters, Irene Roberts of Grants Pass, OR and Colleen Galipeau of Colville, WA. Survivors include his son, JD Smith and wife, Becky of Brewster, WA; granddaughters, Kristen Smith of Ashtabula, OH and Jaymie Richardson and her husband, Mike of Spokane, WA; and three great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Fr. Matthew Nicks will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at Locust Grove Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to Barnes Chapel, Brewster.
