She was born at Gbersitzko, a picturesque town on the Warthe river, in Posen, a part of Prussian Poland, April 20, 1820. Her father, Wilhelm Gotthold Buchholz, was a prominent and successful business man in her native town and her mother was Dorothy Caroline Hirs-korn. She received a good education by attending the kindergarten and public schools of Obersitzko, and subsequently studied music and fine handiwork in a realschule, or manual school. Later she was associated with her sister, Amelia Wilhelmina, in conducting a manual training and dressmaking establishment in her native town. Her only brother, Edward, was liberally educated and became a successful pharmacist. She married Heinrich L. Holst of Ra-zeburg, Germany, on June 15, 1843, and three years later embarked at Bremen, for South Africa and Australia. They were on the trip continuously over five months, from Oct. 12, 1846, until March 18, 1847, stopping at Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, and other towns in what is now the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope. They landed at Port Adelaide in 1847, and resided for some time in the city of Adelaide. Later they founded their home in the town of Hochkirck, where the deceased lived until 1867, about twenty years, and emigrated to the United States. She reached Castle Garden, N.Y., on Aug 3, 1867, exactly four months after leaving Port Adelaide, stopping while enroute at Cape Town, South Africa, the Canary Islands and at Liverpool. From New York City she came to what was then Boonsboro, and shortly after settled on a farm at Pilot Mound, then known as an elevated point, of land in a section of country with few settlements. There she resided until 1890 when she removed to Boone where she made her home until her death. She was the mother of seven children, three of whom died young. Those living are Ludwig H., in Australia, Augusta Adamson at Pilot Mound, and Mary Amme and Bernhart Paul, both residents of Boone. Her husband died at Pilot Mound on Sept. 16, 1885. She was confirmed as a member of the Lutheran church at the age of 14 years and held steadfast to that faith until her death. At different times she was an active member of Lutheran churches at Boone and Ogden, and belonged to the freuenverein, a society of that church at Boone, at the time of her death. As a wife she was faithful and concerned in the success and happiness of her husband; as a mother she was painstaking and diligent in the study and application of moral pieces that build the substantial and true in character. Her life covers a period of nearly 88 years, from April 20, 1820 till March 5, 1908, and her active religious experience is one unbroken chain of more than 74 years, in which her faith and devotion never faltered, her consolation in the saving grace of Christ never wavered. During all the years of her life she treasured the verses of scripture which promise a reward for faithful service to her fellows and to her God, and many of these she repeated frequently even up to the very moment when life departed. In her own words, among the last she uttered, she said: "When Jesus closes my eyes and takes away my breath, I shall be happy in the realization of my faith—I shall go home to my Redeemer." The friends gathered at the home of B.P. Holst at 9:15 Saturday morning, March 7, where short services were held and the funeral sermon was preached in English by Rev. Otto Erbe at the German Lutheran church at 10 o'clock. The remains were taken by the electric railway to the Lutheran cemetery in Amaqua township and buried in the family burial lot.
