Mrs. Breckenridge was born in Viola, Illinois, on November 2, 1852, and when she was 17 years old was married to Hugh Breckenridge. They moved to Kansas in May, 1871, two year after their marriage and homesteaded in Republic County just north of Hollis. They lived there until March, 1911, when they went to Philomath, Oregon, and remained for two years with a daughter who lives there. In May, 1913, they returned to Kansas on account of the health of Mrs. Breckenridge, and from that time until her death she has been at the home of her son on the old home place, waiting patiently for death to release her from pain. Mrs. Breckenridge was one of the pioneer women who endured hardships without complaint and found time in a busy life of her own to help her neighbors in time of sickness or sorrow. She is survived by two daughters and four sons, and 15 grandchildren and was only 62 years old at the time of her death. All the children with the exception of a daughter in Oregon were here at their mother's bedside before her death and the daughter in Oregon was unable to come on account of sickness in her family. All the children with the exception of the youngest boy were married and the family is one that has the respect of everybody. Mrs. Breckenridge was a great help to others and when she was stricken with cancer her friends grieved that they were unable to do any more than make her last days as happy and peaceful as possible. her sufferings were intense, but she kept her happy disposition through it all.
