EMMA POPPE The death of Mrs. Emma Abertha Kelm Poppe at the home of her daughter Mrs. William Droge in DuBois September 18th closes the life of an early settler of Nemaha county. Born in the province of Butow, Germany, she came to America in 1866 soon afteer her marriage to Adolf Reckowsky. After a year in Chicago they came to Seneca and filed on a homestead near this city. Five children were born: Emilie, wife of William Droge, Sr., DuBois; Anna, wife of Frank Simon, Onaga: Emma, wife of Ed Kniesel, Powhattan and Louise, wife of Cleo Mers, Seneca, both of whom are now deceased and one son, Adolph Reckowsky of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Mr. Reckowsky died in 1909 and in 1914 she was married to Henry Poppe of Bern. Mr. Poppe died in 1920. Her death was due to gallstones. Her advanced age would not permit an operation. She died at the age of eighty-eight years, ten months and fifteen days. Rev. O. F. Krueger conducted her funeral at the Evangelical church south of DuBois.
