Interment was in Green Grove Cemetery E.C. Gammons was the undertaker in charge. Mrs. Smith passed away at the home of her sister Mrs. John Gunn on School Street Monday. Mrs. Smith has been in failing health for eighteen months. She was born in Center Harbor in 1854 and at the time of her death was 69 years, 9 months and 29 days of age. She lived in Center Harbor and Ashland practically all of her life. She is survived by three sons, Ernest and Leon of Ashland and Clarence of Arlington, Massachusetts, two daughters, Mrs. Ed [Lila] McFarland of Bath, Maine and Mrs. John [Addie] Gunn of Ashland, two sisters, Mrs. Charles Crowell of Laconia and Mrs. Fred Downing of Ashland, beside more distant relatives. Emma was born in Center Harbor August 14, 1854, and died in Ashland May 12, 1924 at the home of Mrs. John Gunn with whom she had lived since the death of her husband, the late Ira Smith, several years ago. A faithful wife and mother, most true and generous friend scattered seeds of kindness with a tender, loving hand. Mrs. Smith had borne patiently her suffering, confined to her bed for sixteen months without complaint or murmur. She was a member of the Free Baptist Church of Center Harbor and was, from its beginning, a member of the O.W. Keyes Woman's Relief Corps No. 8 of Ashland, filling the office of Chaplain for several years. Neither storms nor ill health prevented her attendance, always performing her duties faithfully and well. She was married March 13, 1870. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church of Ashland on May 14th. In absence of a settled pastor, Mr. Ned B. Sanborn of Meredith, a life-long friend, officiated — speaking words of greatest comfort to the children and friends. Thirty-five years ago, the 10th of July, 1889, Mrs. Smith and Ned B. Sanborn were baptized and joined the Baptist Church or West Center Harbor, and well he has proven himself a kind, true friend to the very last. Miss Platt and Mrs. Orton sang the hymns which were selected by Mrs. Smith before her death, Face to Face and My Lord, Thy Will be Done. Interment was in Green Grove Cemetery, E.G. Gammons in charge. Mrs. Smith left five children, Mrs. L.F. McFarland, [Lila] of Bath, Maine, Ernest, Leon and Mrs. John Gunn, [Addie] of Ashland, and Clarence of Arlington, Massachusetts two sisters, Mrs. Charles Crowell of Laconia and Mrs. Fred Downing of Ashland, several grandchildren and friends that cannot be numbered.
