Description	:	Son of Ira and Emma (Nudd) Smith. His father was from Bath NH and later came to Center Harbor and married Emma and resided with her parents, Enos and Clara Nudd. By the time Ernest was born they had their own property in Center Harbor. Ernest was age 4 in the 1880 census. Married Bertha M. Burial Green Grove Aug 16, 1937, died in a fire. Name on death record was Ernest H. Smith. Newspaper article added by BLHughes: HOLDERNESS MAN BURNS TO DEATH IN ATTEMPT TO RESCUE HORSE FROM BURNING BARN. Ernest A. Smith, long time resident of this section died Saturday, August 14, 1937 while attempting to rescue a horse from a burning barn on Shepard Hill owned by Mrs. Charles Cox, his employer. Mr. and Mrs. Smith made their home on the Cox farm for many years, a familiar landmark in Holderness. The blaze was first noticed by Mrs. Smith, and while she was notifying the Holderness Fire Department Volunteers her husband ran into the barn to rescue the horse. It is said an explosion occurred concurrent with his entrance into the barn, throwing himself on the floor in an unconscious state. Spontaneous combustion is contributed to be the cause. The entire set of buildings were destroyed, valued at $3,000. Mr. Smith was born August 31, 1874, son of Ira A. and Emma (Nudd) Smith. in Center Harbor and had continued to make this section his home during his entire lifetime. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had been with Mr. and Mrs. Cox for five years. He was buried in Green Grove Cemetery. Survivors include a son, Claude M. of Concord, a daughter Mrs. Howard L. Barrett, his widow two sisters, Mrs. Lila McFarland and Addie Gunn of Ashland. The Ashland Citizen, August 19, 1937.
