Description	:	Emma Godfrey, 110, of Griswold, Iowa's oldest resident, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at the Griswold Care Center where she had been a resident for the last ten years. The daughter of Clarkson and Ellen (DeHart) Godfrey, Emma was born on the family farm in Waveland Township in Pottawatamie County on April 1, 1887. Read More	Emma Godfrey, 110, of Griswold, Iowa's oldest resident, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at the Griswold Care Center where she had been a resident for the last ten years. The daughter of Clarkson and Ellen (DeHart) Godfrey, Emma was born on the family farm in Waveland Township in Pottawatamie County on April 1, 1887. She graduated from Elliott High School in the class of 1906 as salutatorian of her class. She taught school for a few years and then cared for her invalid mother and sister. Emma moved to Elliott when she was 47 years old and then to the Care Center when she was 100. Emma was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church, taught Sunday School, and was always involved with church activities because church was the central part of her life. Emma was a seamstress and sewed clothing for needy children. Survivors include four nieces and two nephews as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews. Emma was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Albert, and Ernest Godfrey, and three sisters, Maudie Godfrey, Isabell Heberly, and Nellie Hamlin. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 11, at the Elliott United Methodist Church with Pastor Dean Surface officiating. Music was provided by Laura Amos, soloist, and Doris Reed, organist. Bearers were Max England, Randy Dolch, Fred Hildebrant, Rick Nelson, Randy Tye, and Max Dolch. Interment was in the Hillside Cemetery at Elliott. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold was in charge of arrangements. Griswold American, Wednesday, July 16, 1997; page 3
