Hiland, daughter of John and Mary Ann Kick, was born near Plattesville, Wisconsin, on September 17, 1853, and died in her home in Ogden, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 4 months, and 10 days. She came to Iowa with her parents in a covered wagon in the spring of 1871. She was married March 10, 1875 to Milton Hiland. Mr. Hiland passed away February 7, 1921. Mrs. Hiland has resided in the Ogden community for the past forty-seven years and was a resident of Boone County for sixty years. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Nell Kouhns; a nephew, Ben Kouhns, who made his home with her, and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, eight sisters and three brothers. She has been a loyal member of the Ogden Methodist church for many years. Mrs. Hiland had a jolly, jovial disposition. Her laughter was hearty and whole-souled. She had a strong personality. Her convictions on intemperance and other social evils were strong and definitely high. Her likes and dislikes were pronounced and she frankly stated her opinions in open sincerity. As Shakespeare would say 'Her friends and their adoption tried, she grappled them to her soul with hoops of steel.' She loved beautiful things in the home and in the garden. After the death of her husband, concerning whom she spoke repeatedly, she spent much time with her flowers and shrubs, thus assuaging the loneliness which seemed ever overshadowing her. Mrs. Hiland led an industrious life, and ever exhibited unusual thrift and business acumen in caring for all that she and her hard-working husband had acquired. She was a real helpmate in their long struggle for financial security, and were rewarded with unusual prosperity as Iowa farmers. She seemed deeply concerned about those who were ill or in distress, and entered into the lives of others with compassion. Her appreciation for her nephew, who has been giving her, the past years, so many thoughtful ministries, seemed to ripen into a motherly pride and affection as she came to lean more and more on his young shoulders for her needed support. Their consideration for each other has been pleasing to behold. And while her many old friends and neighbors will miss her much from their midst, this young man of her own home will miss her most of all. To us she was more than a parishioner. She came to be a friend, tried and true, as the swiftly fleeting years brought us nearer and nearer to the pearly gates of the New Jerusalem. Barry Michie # 47110636
