With advancing age she gradually curtailed her outside activities, although she had not been bedfast, but was happily permitted to continue her interests in her beloved flowers, her friends, the radio and newspapers to the very last. Mary Ann (Kick) Burt, daughter of John and Mary (Shatto) Kick, was born in Ohio on May 1st, 1852. When but a small child, she moved with her parents to Plattsville, Wisconsin, where she attended the public schools, helped with work on the farm and grew to young womanhood. The spring she was eighteen, she with her father drove overland to Boone County, where they located on the farm south of Ogden, now known as the Lee Haberer place. An interesting sidelight as to her ability and character at this time is shown by the fact that her father left her in sole charge of the farm that fall while he returned to Wisconsin for the rest of the family. In 1885 she was united in marriage to William Burt of Scranton, Iowa, at which place they made their home for the next ten years. In 1895, they moved to Ogden where ten years later she was bereft of her husband. During the following years she devoted herself to the upbringing of their young son and watched him grown to sturdy manhood. Still later she watched him with a pain, no one but a widowed mother with an only child could know, march to war and rejoiced at his safe return. During the autumn of life, she has passed a serene and happy time as the beloved mother and grandmother in her home with her son, John and wife. Grandma Burt, was a regular attendant at the Congregational church until the infirmities of age prevented her from leaving home. During the last few years of her life, her greatest interest has centered in her grandchildren, whose growing minds and sturdy bodies have been a source of never ending delight to her. At the time of her passing, Mrs. Burt was 82 years, nine months and eight days of age. She leaves to mourn her departure, an only son, John, his wife, Olga, three grandchildren, Phyllis, Bobby, and Billy Burt, two sisters, Mrs. Emma Hiland and Mrs. Nellie Kouhns, all of Ogden as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Alvin Treloar, Jack Stevens, Clarence Thompson, Welcome Donelson, Jack Treloar and Mike Blaskey. Chas. H. Williams and Ben Treloar were honorary pallbearers. Mesdames H. L. Bass and C. L. Thomas sang "Going down the Valley" "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Rock of Ages". Mrs. J. D. Pauls and Mrs. Chas. Nelson had charge of the flowers. Those from out of town attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. John Hansen of Dayton, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Hansen of Dexter, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Madison Warden of Boone, Miss Katherine Hammerstedt and Miss Helen Kouhns of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stevens, Mrs. Clint Steffy of Boone and Mrs. Arthur Groom and Vera of Pilot Mound.
