In the 1900 Census for Franklin, Ness County, Kansas, 14-year-old Emma J. was living with her parents, Willi and Elizabeth A., and her brother Joe and six sisters. (Name spelled Malott in that census. In 1910, William Melott was still in Franklin, Kansas, widowed, and living with his son Joe and four of his daughters.) In that Census, James and Emma stated they had been married for 9 years. --------------- Obituary From Ottumwa Daily Courier, Friday, November 23, 1944, Page 6: Mrs. Emma Jane White, 301 South Benton street, died at 12:30 a.m. today at the age of 59 years. She was born at Ness City, Kan., June 10, 1885, and had lived in Ottumwa for the past six years. She was a member of the Methodist church in Howard, Kan. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James E. Craft, in July, 1939. Surviving are her husband, James H. White; a daughter, Mrs. Florence L. Butler of Ottumwa route 2; six sisters, Mrs. F.B. Leslie of Yampa, Colo., Mrs. Grace Anderson of Everett, Wash., Mrs. Nona Harrison and Mrs. Alex Deines of North Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. Daisy Kallenberger of LeRoy, Kan., and Mrs. E.A. Craft of Anderson, Mo.; also 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. White, who died at her home Thursday, will be at the Johnson funeral chapel at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. L.E. Welshons. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Jaster, Ray Black, Clinton Crosby, William Hendricks, Earl Harsch and John Grabenschroer.
