The mother who is dead is Mrs. Edward Backes of the community northeast of Luzerne, while the injured are her husband, Edward Backes, daughters Martha, Alice, and Velma. Two other children, Franklin and Frances, twins had been left at home. The accident occurred when the car which was being driven by Mr. Backes, attempted to pass semi-trailer truck. In getting over on the left, Backes went up over the curb onto the shoulder that had become soft by thawing, and in so doing, he lost control and crashed Into the abutment of a bridge. Mrs. Backes was apparently killed almost instantly. Mrs. Emma Backes was the daughter of Claus and Amelia Danker and was born on a farm in the Luzerne community on June 19, 1899. She was 41 years, 8 months and 4 days of age at the time of her death. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Luzerne in 1913 by the Rev. G. Schroeder. On October 23, 1923 she was married to Edward Backes and the couple started farming in the community northeast of Luzerne. To this union were born six children, all of whom, with the husband survive. They are Martha, Alice, Luella, Velma, Franklin and Frances. She, also leaves, her mother, Mrs. Amelia Danker of Luzerne, two sisters, Mrs. Clint Jackson and Mrs. Otis Wright of Luzerne; three brothers, William Danker of Luzerne, and Claus and Rudolph Danker of the Chelsea community. Funeral services were held from the home Thursday, afternoon at 1 o'clock, and from St. John's Lutheran church in Keystone at 1:30. They were in charge of pastor, Rev. A. W. Brauer. Interment was in the Keystone cemetery. Casket hearers were Harold and Louis Jackson, Richard Wright, Richard and Carl Reick and Lawrence Backes. Flower girls were Lillian Jackson, Betty Wright, and Jean and Mildred Danker. Mrs. Backes was an active and faithful member of St. John's Lutheran church of Keystone and will be sorely missed there, as well as in her home, and by her many friends in the community.
