Description	:	Emmett died at age 48 in a fall from a hayloft. He died on Christmas day shortly after noon hour. According to his obit, a Christmas dinner had been prepared by his mother and Miss Effie Major of Imperial, it had been planned that other members of the family would come in the evening to exchange gifts. He died on Christmas day shortly after noon hour. According to his obit, a Christmas dinner had been prepared by his mother and Miss Effie Major of Imperial, it had been planned that other members of the family would come in the evening to exchange gifts. When they called Emmett to dinner, he didn't come and his brother Vernor went to find him and found him on the floor. Dr. Clark pronounced him dead and said that he had been killed instantly from a fall from the hayloft to the concrete floor below. He was unmarried and lived with his parents, he farmed and was engaged in trucking. He had lived in the Elwood area for 42 years. He came to Gosper County with his parents in 1894. Funeral services were held at the Christian church, Sunday pm at 2:30 with the Rev. H.T. Slagg of the Methodist church officiating. He is buried in the Elwood Cemetary. He was survived by his parents, two brothers, and five sisters. Mrs. Grace McLaughlin of Milford, Iowa, Mrs. B.L. Phillips of Elwood, Mrs. Olice Harlow of Holstein, Miss Effie Major of Imperial and Myrtle of Elwood. From the Beaver City Times-Tribune, Thursday, 31 December 1936, page 1, column 6 Barn Fall Fatal Emmet Major, 48, fell about eight feet from a hay loft to a cement floor at his parent's farm four miles west of Smithfield, Friday, and was killed instantly. Sheriff R.L. Bragg, acting coroner, said Major apparently slipped after feeding hay to some calves. His skull waas crushed. The sheriff termed the fall accidental. Major's body was found by a brother, Vernon, who went to the barn after the farmer failed to heed calls to "come and eat Christmas dinner." He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Major, two brothers and five sisters. Funeral services were held at Elwood, Sunday. _Hastings Tribune.
