When a small child, the family moved to Fairfield, Iowa. On 21 March 1886 he was married to Angelina Wells at Fairfiled, Iowa. In 1894 they moved in the Quakervile neighborhood. Ten children were born to this union. My father was of Irish descent and I well remember how much he enjoyed the Irish songs and stories. One time when the men of the Grange were having a program, they persuaded him to sing an Irish song. He also liked to read and I remember many a winter evening of him reading aloud to us. He enjoyed his home and the farm and when he got older and the boys took over the farming, he was content to work in the garden and yard. he passed away 10 January 1940, at the age of 84. When my parents moved to Nebraska from southeastern Iowa, Uncle Jim, Dave and George were aleady here, and I guess they must have sold dad on the idea that this was a land of opportunity. Dad came on ahead with some household furnishings and left Mother to come later with 5 children on the train. I don't see how she did it. Those first years were pretty hard, but Dad was a hard worker, and very ambitious and with the help of Mother they managed to make a living. Mother was a quiet sort of person but very determined about some things. I remember when we had been here for a number of years and just beginning to get somewhere, a man came and wanted to buy the farm. Dad was ready to sell and move to Missouri, but Mother said no. now she had a home and she was not going to give it up and start over again. So she wouldn't sign the papers, and I think Dad was always glad she wouldn't as he took a lot of pride in his home. Mother must have gotten very homesick for her own people, especially those first few years, as most of them lived in Iowa and she didn't get to visit them very often. Dad used to hitch up the horses to the spring wagon and take us to Sunday school at Smithfield. Later we went to Quakerville. Mother didn't go often as she usually had a baby to care for. We lived for a number of years in a 3 room sod house, must have made housekeeping quite a task. There were 9 of us by this time. We often got out our singing books and set around the kitchen table and sing hymns with Dad for our leader. Mother always said she couldn't sing, but I know she could carry a tune, for I have heard her sing "Nellie Bly." Dad passed away very suddenly of January of 1940. After his death, Mother didn't seem to have the incentive to live, and she followed in June of the same year. I have wonderful memories of relatives and dear friends. Additional bio from Raymond Major Memoirs of My Dad by Ray Major As I remember my Father, who has been gone for nearly 16 years, I think of him as being jolly and very good natured, thoughtful of others and always ready to help in times of trouble. He loved to work, I think that was his happiest moments, when he was working at something he liked. After we boys were large enough to do the farming and the garden work, he enjoyed hoeing and working in the garden, also choring and chopping wood. He also enjoyed singing very much, when I was a boy he used to take me with him when he would drive to town in the old spring wagon. He would always be whistling or singing as we drove along. Although he didn't possess much of worldly goods, I believe he was content with his lot and did not envy anyone. He was 81 years in 1937 when they moved to Elwood and lived 3 years there or until 10 January 1940 when he passed away. if he had lived until 31 January 1956, he would have been one hundred years old.
