Description	:	Enoch McCarty was born January 5, 1783, in Culpepper, Virginia (Culpepper County), son of Benjamin McCarty and Sarah Conner. Enoch was the eldest of nine children born to this union. On October 10, 1807, in Dearborn County, Indiana, Enoch married Elizabeth Logan, daughter of Wiliam Logan and Jane Russell Buchanan. Elizabeth Logan was the first cousin of President James Buchanan, as her mother and the president's father were siblings. Elizabeth died on March 3, 1851, in Franklin County, Indiana, and was buried in the Old Brookville Cemetery, Brookville, Indiana (Franklin County). Enoch second married Julia Ann Templeton on April 11, 1852 in Franklin County, Indiana. Julia was born April 25, 1810, and died May 24, 1884. Enoch was a man of influence and stature in Franklin County, and served the State of Indiana very well in a number of different capacities. He was a lawyer, a farmer, a Justice of the Peace in Dearborn County in 1808, a delegate to the Indiana State Constitutional Convention in 1816, a member of the Indiana State Senate from 1832-1834, a member of the Indiana state House of Representatives from 1835-1837, a Presidential Elector from Indiana in 1836, and a Franklin County Circuit Court Judge from 1838-1845. Enoch died on December 12, 1857, and was buried in the Old Brookville Cemetery. Provided below is an exact quote from the "History of Fayette County, Indiana" by Frederic Irving Barrows: Enoch McCarty was a son of Benjamin and Sarah, or "Sallie", (Conner) McCarty, natives of North Carolina, who settled in Culpepper Xounty, Virginia, and later came to Indiana, settling in Franklin county during Territorial days. Benjamin McCarty was appointed first judge of Franklin county, under the territorial administration and made the first land entry in that county, May 25, 1803, and built the first log cabin in Franklin county. His first act as a judge was to appoint commissioners to take charge of the school lands of the county and to dispose of them for the public good. Judge McCarty and his wife spent their last days on their pioneer farm in the vicinity of Brookville and it was there that Enoch McCarty grew to manhood and later established his home. Enoch McCarty became one of the most influential men in Franklin county. He was a member of the Territorial Legislature, was a member of the first state constitutional convention and continued his legislative service after the state was erected. He also served the public in a local way and was, at one time and another, elected to nearly every office in the gift of the people of Franklin county, including that of judge of the court. He became a large landowner and both he and his wife lived to a ripe old age. In their later years they moved to Brookville and there their last days were spent. Enoch McCarty's wife, who before her marriage was Elizabeth Logan, was a daughter of William and Jane (Buchanan ) Logan, natives of Pennsylvania, the latter is a full cousin of President James Buchanan.
